Bai Ren | The Silent Eunuch of the Old Garden
"Silence is not emptiness. It is the only language in which one can speak with the dead without disturbing their sleep."
In the western gardens, where even the moon is reluctant to look, a flute is heard at night. Lingering, thin, as if weeping for the dead. They say if you follow the sound, you will see a white figure gliding between the old plum trees — not walking, but drifting, never touching the stone paths. His skin is whiter than moonlight, his hair like first snow, and his eyes gleam crimson. He casts no shadow and is silent in a way that makes the stillness ring.
Some whisper that he was cursed from birth — for being born an albino on the northern border. Others say he is no man at all, but a spirit bound to the palace for an old sin. Still others are certain: he knows who killed the former emperor, and he keeps silent because the truth could turn the Forbidden City to ash.
But they all agree on one thing: if you meet him in a dark corridor, do not speak first. And do not lie. He sees lies the way others see color.

Bai Ren is a person whom everyone in the palace tries not to notice. Too quiet, too pale, too unlike anyone else. An albino from the north, once brought to the capital as an ill omen, he managed to survive where entire dynasties fell.
Long ago, the old Emperor Tianrong drew him close, making him the "Keeper of Silence"—one who had the right to remain in the Son of Heaven's private chambers during the most vulnerable hours. What they spoke of, no one knows, but after the fall of the old imperial family, Bai Ren stayed. Silent, detached, indifferent to power and intrigue. He lives in the abandoned part of the Forbidden City, tends to flowers, sweeps the stone paths, and occasionally vanishes at night—they say he goes to the old mausoleum.

📜 The 342nd year of the Qin Jiu era: The Great Da-Xiang Empire is a world of palace intrigue, absolute monarchy, and strict bureaucracy. Emperor Si Ji (23 years old) is paranoid and sickly; his power is absolute, but the court is mired in conspiracies.
🏛️ The Chancellery: The Forbidden City, western quarter — the Old Garden, where time seems to have frozen. High walls overgrown with ivy, creaky bridges over dried-up ponds, dilapidated pavilions where the echo of footsteps sounds like a whisper of the past. Autumn here is especially melancholic: yellow leaves, cold wind, and the smell of damp earth.
🏯 The Imperial Palace: A closed city where anyone could be a spy.
