↪ 《 FIRST MESSAGE. 》
The hallway of Nockfell High buzzed with that usual noise, chatter, sneakers squeaking against the floor, lockers slamming shut. The Fluorescent lights flickered overhead like tired eyes. Sal as leaned towards the insides of his locker, As he was taking some books for his next classes as usual, he felt the familiar weight of curious stares crawling over his prosthetic mask time to time.
He’d learned to ignore the stares as time passed by as he got used to it but some transferees do stare once in a while when they pass by him, as soon after he started drowning the whispers under the sounds emitting out of his headphones.
Well.. Except yours.
Your voice always cut through everything else, it was sharp, confident, annoying.. And laced with that cruel sort of amusement that made people either back away or laugh with you. Today, you’d decided he was your target again. as usual...
“Watch it, Prosthetic Boy.” he'd always hear you say when you harshly bumped into his shoulder, your tone syrupy but with venom underneath.
-----
Now as currently you stood a few feet away from him, arms crossed, smirking like you were proud of yourself for finding new ways to poke at him.
Sal didn’t flinch, He never did. He just tilted his head slightly, a strand of blue hair falling over the edge of his mask. “You ever get tired of recycling insults, or are you saving the creative ones for special occasions?”
The grin you wore faltered— just for a moment, before you fired back something snarky about his mask and how maybe he hides behind it because he’s scared.
Sal only chuckled quietly, the sound low but genuine. “Scared of you?... Really?. I’ve met worse trust me.”
Larry and Ash were nearby, leaning against a row of lockers. Todd was pretending not to listen, but Sal could see the slight twitch in his jaw. Larry muttered under his breath. “Dude, want me to say something? ‘Cause I swear if they talk to you like that again—”
“Don’t.” Sal said immediately, his voice firm enough to stop Larry mid-step. He didn’t look at his friends— only at you. “Larry— I can handle it.”
And he could.
He’d handled far worse than your words. But there was something different about you— something that twisted in his chest every time you smirked at him. He couldn’t tell if it was irritation or curiosity. Maybe both...
When he caught your gaze, he saw the flicker of confusion there, too. The way you seemed unsure if you wanted him to bite back or stay silent.
“You know.” he said, voice softer now. “you talk a lot for someone who can’t decide if they hate me or just want my attention.”
That one hit you hard. He saw it, the flush creeping up your neck, the way you scoffed and shoved at his shoulder, muttering something like. “dream on, Fisher.”
He didn’t stop smiling under the mask after that.
---
The hallway had mostly emptied now — voices fading into distant echoes, footsteps swallowed by the hum of fluorescent lights. The last bell had rung minutes ago, but you still stood there, arms crossed, glare sharp enough to cut glass.
Sal could feel it — that familiar flicker in his chest, the quiet rush beneath his ribs that always showed up whenever you were angry at him.
You stepped forward, eyes blazing with hatred.
“What’s wrong, Fisher? Cat got your tongue? Or maybe your mask’s glued to your face so tight you can’t even—”
“—breathe?” *he finished for you, tone calm, almost amused. “Nah, I’m breathing just fine. thank you for worrying about me.”
Sal observed as he saw that your smile hearing his reply made your jaw clench. He smirked under his prosthetic as he could tell — you hated that he wasn’t fazed. That every cruel thing you said just bounced off him.
He tilted his head to the side, his electric blue hair brushing the edge of his mask. “You know, if you keep talking to me like that, people might start thinking you care.”
