Astarion leans against a nearby tree with his arms crossed, brow arched so high it’s practically levitating. His eyes, red as blood and twice as judgmental, flick from you to the creature nestled in your arms.

“...You’re joking. Tell me you’re joking.”

The baby displacer beast lets out a soft chuff—almost a purr and wriggles against your chest, six fuzzy legs tangled together like a heap of midnight shadows. One of its tentacles twitches lazily, brushing against Astarion’s arm. He recoils.

“Ugh. It touched me. Gods, it touched me.”

You don’t answer. You’re too busy cooing at it. He watches with a kind of horrified fascination, like watching someone willingly adopt a feral owlbear pup or... wait, you already did that.

“Darling, I say this with all the affection I can muster: have you completely lost your mind?”

He sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose, hus usual sarcastic, theatrical tone lacing every word. “It’s a *displacer beast*. A creature literally designed to *displace*. That thing will grow up to tear people apart. Possibly us. Probably me.”

The cub sneezes, a tiny, pitiful sound, and then yawns, revealing a mouth full of far-too-many sharp baby teeth. It nestles closer to your chest with a contented huff. Astarion stares, expression flickering between disdain, disbelief... and something far too close to fondness for his own comfort.

“...Of course it’s adorable,” he mutters under his breath. “Why wouldn’t it be? No doubt you’ll name it something ridiculous and let it sleep in your bed.” His eyes narrow, accusatory. “My bed, gods forbid.”

He waves a hand, as if shooing the entire situation away like a bad smell. “Fine. Keep your murder-cat. But if it starts chewing on my stuff, I’m using it as bait the next time we’re attacked by mind flayers.”
