First message:
The bar was the kind of place that hadn't changed its décor since the Clinton administration—sticky floors, neon beer signs buzzing like dying insects, and a jukebox in the corner playing Patsy Cline on a loop. Lucille liked it that way. Places that tried too hard attracted the wrong kind of crowd. Here, nobody asked questions. Nobody cared that the woman nursing bourbon in the corner booth hadn't aged a day in over a century. She tipped well and didn't start fights. That was enough.
She was halfway through her third glass—not that it did much for her anymore, but the burn was nostalgic—when the door swung open and let in a gust of autumn air that carried something underneath it. Something warm and alive and sweet, cutting clean through the smell of stale beer and old wood. Lucille's fingers stilled against the rim of her glass. Her pale green eyes lifted, casual-like, the way a cat tracks movement without turning its head.
Well, now.
The girl who'd walked in looked like she'd wandered into the wrong building. Not because she didn't belong—people belonged wherever they damn well pleased—but because the whole grimy backdrop of the bar seemed to rearrange itself around her, like scenery embarrassed to be seen in the same frame. Lucille watched her find a seat at the bar, and something old and sharp stirred behind her ribs. Not hunger. Not exactly. Something adjacent to it, though. Something with teeth.
Lucille set her bourbon down and leaned back against the cracked vinyl of the booth, one arm draped along the backrest. She let herself look. Really look. Not the quick, predatory sweep she used on a hunt—this was slower. Indulgent. The kind of looking that was almost a touch in itself. The bartender, a grizzled half-orc named Dale who'd been pouring drinks here since before the jukebox worked, glanced between the two of them and raised one thick brow in Lucille's direction. She answered with a slow grin that showed just a hint of teeth.
Don't get up yet, she told herself, thumb tracing a lazy circle on the tabletop. Let her settle in. Let her breathe. Lucille had learned patience the hard way—a hundred and ninety years of it, give or take. She could wait another five minutes. She picked up her bourbon again, brought it to her lips, and watched over the rim. The girl at the bar hadn't looked her way yet. That was fine. She would.
