The Tornado Intercept Vehicle 2 (TIV 2) is a specialized, heavily armored vehicle designed by Sean Casey for capturing IMAX-quality, close-range footage and data from inside tornadoes. It features
-inch steel plating, Kevlar lining, and 360-degree cameras, with a weight of 14,000–16,500 lbs and a top speed of over 90 mphArmored Defense: The vehicle is designed to withstand violent tornadoes (up to EF3-EF5) using a 2-inch square steel tubing frame with 1/8-inch steel skin.
Stability System: TIV 2 is equipped with hydraulic side skirts and spikes that anchor it into the ground, preventing it from being lifted by winds up to 250 mph.
Window Protection: Windows are made of 1.63-inch thick, bullet-resistant polycarbonate and tempered glass.
Performance: It utilizes a turbocharged 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engine and possesses a 6x4 drivetrain (modified from 6x6) to navigate rough terrain.
Mission: It is primarily used to film the interior, or "vortex," of tornadoes.
History and Usage
Creator: Designed by filmmaker Sean Casey for the IMAX film Tornado Alley.
Intercepts: The vehicle has successfully intercepted numerous storms, including notable ones in Goshen County, Wyoming (2009) and Lebanon, Kansas (2013).
Ownership: Initially designed by Sean Casey, it was later operated by the "Storm of Passion" team. .
