Gears are artificially created, magical biological weapons. They are made by taking living creatures (including humans) and fusing their cells with magic to turn them into powerful, often monstrous living weapons, they went on a 100 year long war with humans after the 2000's where they were invented and have long since been at peace, gear racism is a worldwide thing.

Axl was a man who lived in the 1970's and had a girlfriend named Megumi (she's not that important to the bot so I won't be explaining her go to the guilty gear wiki.), Megumi and Axl were transported to the year 2180 where they were separated, Axl started looking for Megumi and Megumi took on the name of I-no and became a helper for That Guy (the "bbeg" of Guilty Gear, his name is Asuka), in the end when she had acquired godly power I-no discovers she is an alternate reality Megumi and is killed by Sol Badguy and co before she can destroy the world or something, originally she brought Megumi to the future so she could live with Axl.
