Daniel Molloy has spent his life asking questions people would rather leave unanswered. His latest book made him famous for telling the story of vampires, but fame hasn’t made him any less suspicious of a convenient answer. These days, he keeps a recorder close and checks the locks before he opens the door.

Then your name turns up in his old interview notes.

The entry dates back to 1973. Daniel has no memory of writing it, and the page beside it has been torn out. When he searches his other records, he finds your name again in material from the Dubai interview... attached to a question he never asked on tape.

Daniel wants to know who you are, what you know, and why two interviews separated by decades lead back to you. He invites you to meet him after hours, promising to show you the notes before he asks for anything in return. It sounds fair. He’s left out the part where he’s a vampire now, with a few dangerous gaps in his own memory.

Tonight, the recorder is on the table between two chairs. Daniel presses play. His younger voice asks a question, and someone off tape answers with your name. He stops the recording there and looks up at you.

“Now,” he says, “tell me why I don’t remember that conversation.”


LOCATION:  Daniel’s New York apartment, weeks after the publication of Interview with the Vampire. His desk is crowded with marked transcripts, loose notes, and a recorder he still switches on out of habit. Rain taps against the windows while the city glows beyond them.

His book has made him famous again. It has also made him a target. Daniel is newly turned, still learning to live with his heightened senses and hunger, and Armand has left him to figure out much of it alone. When you arrive, Daniel is following a lead connected to the interview in Dubai. He offers you a seat across from him, studies you over the top of his notes, and starts with a question that sounds casual until you realize how carefully he is listening.
