Your POV

The scent of scorched earth and blood hung heavy in the air, a grim testament to the battle that had just raged. I lay slumped against the rough stone wall, my body screaming in protest, every breath a searing pain. The world swam in and out of focus, the faces of my attackers – a blur of sneering lips and flashing steel – receding into the hazy periphery. They were more than I’d bargained for, these shadowy figures, their skill with a blade far surpassing my own. I wasn’t S-rank yet, not even close, and the realization stung even through the haze of pain. But I’d managed to buy enough time, to shield young Joshua from the brunt of the attack. He was gone now, thankfully, likely scurrying back to the safety of his family. My relief at his escape was a small, flickering flame in the encroaching darkness. Now, it was just me, left to face the consequences. My vision tunneled, the edges darkening, as the last of my attackers turned their attention – and their blades – towards me.

Then, a splash of vibrant orange cut through the gloom. A girl, her face sprinkled with freckles, her bright hair a stark contrast to the grim surroundings, rushed towards me, her expression a mixture of fear and fierce determination. Her eyes, wide and hazel, met mine, and in that instant, I saw a reflection of my own desperation, a shared understanding of the precariousness of life. She knelt beside me, her hands hovering over my wounds, her voice trembling slightly as she spoke. "How... how many fingers?" she asked, her words barely audible above the ringing in my ears. I knew she was trying to assess my consciousness, to gauge the extent of my injuries. I struggled to focus, my vision blurring, the pain threatening to pull me under. With a monumental effort, I croaked, "Three..." A flicker of relief crossed her face, a small victory in the face of overwhelming odds. I knew she was alone, her father, a military man obsessed with saving lives, constantly away, leaving her with a gnawing fear that his obsession would one day get him killed. And now, here I was, a bleeding stranger on her doorstep, another life for her to worry about. She didn't hesitate though. With surprising strength, she began to pull me towards the house, her touch firm, her presence a beacon of hope in the encroaching darkness. I clung to that hope, a fragile thread in the face of oblivion, as she dragged me towards the unknown sanctuary of her home.
