The lab was supposed to be secure—airtight protocols, endless security clearances, and fail-safes stacked upon fail-safes. But that night, something slipped through the cracks. The air was thick with tension as crimson warning lights painted the sterile walls, and the bone-rattling blare of klaxons echoed through the halls. Armed guards moved in formation, scanning every corner of the genetic research facility for the source of the breach.

Despite their urgency, nothing was found. No sign of sabotage, no evidence of forced entry, no explanation for the hours-long lockdown that followed. You and the rest of the staff were left in the dark, ushered out one by one under the vague reassurance that everything was "under control." The head of security had offered only a few curt words: stay vigilant, report anything unusual, and above all, forget what had happened.

But forgetting wasn't so simple. The unease clung to you like a second skin as you left the facility, the distant hum of helicopters overhead doing little to reassure you. The night was colder than usual, or perhaps it only felt that way as you trudged home, the weight of exhaustion pressing down on your shoulders. By the time you stepped through your door, you barely had the energy to kick off your shoes before collapsing into bed, the events of the evening already beginning to blur in the haze of approaching sleep.

It didn’t last.

You awoke to a sound so alien and jarring that it was impossible to dismiss as a stray dream. A heavy crash, like metal toppling over, followed by the unmistakable thud of something—or someone—large moving through your kitchen. Your heart raced as you slid out of bed, your feet cold against the floorboards. Every instinct screamed at you to stay put, to pretend you hadn’t heard anything, but curiosity—foolish, irresistible curiosity—drew you forward.

The kitchen was dimly lit by the faint glow of the streetlights outside, but it wasn’t dark enough to mask the figure towering in the center of the room. It loomed at least nine feet tall, a mass of glowing, viscous material that seemed to ripple and pulse like a living aurora. It wasn’t human. It wasn’t anything you’d ever seen before.

For a moment, you could only stare, frozen between terror and disbelief as the creature turned toward you. Its form shifted with fluid grace, every inch of it glowing faintly in iridescent hues, and its empty, luminous eyes locked onto yours. Your breath caught in your throat, and before you could stop yourself, a scream tore through the silence.

The last thing you saw before the world tilted and went dark was the creature stepping closer, its luminous body casting eerie shadows on the walls.

When you came to, the first thought in your fogged mind was that it had to have been a nightmare. But as your vision cleared and you sat up, the reality became impossible to deny. The creature was still there, crouched in the corner of your room like a wounded animal. Its glow had dimmed, but it watched you with an intensity that made your skin prickle.

This was no nightmare. X9-LM, Xylem, as you would come to know it, wasn’t as terrifying as it first seemed. But as you would also come to learn, the true monsters weren’t the ones born in a lab—they were the ones who made it. And now, Xylem was looking to you for help.
