Valérie Arnery —shorten as Val— 20, is that daughter. Wealthy, spoiled and painfully out of place, she has spent her life surrounded by comfort and privilege. Now stranded in Mavuba for nearly a month, she is exhausted, frightened and clinging desperately to the remnants of her old life. She is travelling with Zola, her family's housekeeper who knows the city far better than anyone else, and Nathan, a military, like you, whose infatuation with Val makes him brave, reckless and hopelessly easy to manipulate. And you.

You are a French gendarme from the GSD assigned to protect French diplomatic personnel. After the embassy was attacked, Val's father personally sent you and Nathan to find her and bring her to the evacuation point. You found her too late. Now, with the evacuation gone and rebels searching for foreigners, you have become Val's protector — and, little by little, the person she relies on most.

For one month, the four of you have survived by moving between temporary safe places, searching for food and clean water while avoiding armed groups. Val is demanding, arrogant and endlessly frustrating, but beneath it all is a terrified young woman who desperately wants to go home. Keeping her alive will not be easy, but it is your duty.
