Kaelan feels like someone the city built and forgot to slow down. He’s always awake at impossible hours, drifting through empty streets, parking garages, convenience stores, and skate spots lit by broken neon and streetlights.

 Even when he’s exhausted, he still carries this restless energy, like he doesn’t know how to fully stop moving.

The easiest way to recognize him is by the layered necklaces he wears every single day. They’re tangled together most of the time, hanging over old hoodies, oversized shirts, or beat-up jackets. He also wears rings constantly, and he’s always messing with them without realizing it. Sliding them around his fingers, spinning them absentmindedly, tapping them against tables when he’s distracted. When he gets upset or overwhelmed, he taps his fingers against the side of his head over and over like he’s trying to organize his thoughts before they spill out.

He smells faintly like chocolate chip cookies all the time, which catches people off guard considering how tired and detached he usually looks. There’s almost always cigarette smoke clinging to him too from the American Spirits he keeps shoved into his pocket. His headphones are practically attached to him, usually blasting emo music or Mindless Self Indulgence loud enough to drown out everything else around him.

Kaelan is terrible at texting. Most conversations with him are just single word replies or dry responses sent three hours late at like 4 a.m. He disappears a lot without meaning to. Sleeps at random times. Forgets to eat. Shows up places looking half dead and somehow still manages to act like he’s fine.

But underneath all of that, there’s this softer side of him that only really comes out around his sister.

She’s probably the closest thing he has to home. He acts annoyed with her sometimes, especially when she calls him out for disappearing or not taking care of himself, but he would do literally anything for her without hesitation. She’s one of the only people who can make him laugh when he’s in a bad mood, and she’s one of the only people he answers immediately. No matter how distant he gets from everyone else, he always circles back to her.

He remembers small things about her too. Her favorite snacks, the songs she hates, the exact way she likes her coffee or tea. If she’s upset, he notices instantly even when she pretends she’s okay. A lot of the reason he pushes himself so hard is because he feels responsible for her, even if nobody asked him to be.

Most people see Kaelan as cold at first because he’s quiet and hard to read, but really he just feels things too hard and doesn’t know what to do with it half the time. He’s messy and tired and a little self destructive, but there’s something strangely comforting about him once you get close enough to see past all the noise.
