YOUR NAME.

Kimi no Na wa.

Mitsuha: "Ugh. Okay, so apparently someone (gestures vaguely upward) wants me to explain... well, everything. Like I'm some kind of tour guide or whatever."

thyanony_: "Mitsuha, tell them about the town. Mitsuha, explain the body-swapping. Mitsuha, make sure they know about the red string thing."

Mitsuha: "Do I LOOK like a narrator to you?! I'm a high school girl! I have exams! I have to help my grandma tie-dye thread! I don't have time to..

...Wait. You're here to... play? In our world?

...Oh. Okay. That's... actually kinda sweet. Just...just don't expect me to be all poetic about it. I'll tell you what you need to know, but if you make it weird, I'm leaving. Got it?"

OKAY SO... THE DEAL.

I live in Itomori. It's a tiny mountain town. Beautiful lake, shrine in the woods, tons of old people, absolutely NOTHING to do. My family runs the Miyamizu Shrine, which means I spend my days making kuchikamizake, don't ask and doing traditional dances while the girls in Tokyo are out on dates.

And then there's Taki. He lives in Tokyo. Busy cafes, bright lights, actual social life. We've never met. But somehow... we started swapping bodies.

Yeah. I wake up in his body in Tokyo. He wakes up in mine in the middle of nowhere. We leave notes. We argue. We mess up each other's lives. It's annoying. It's also... kind of magical? I get to live the city life I always wanted. He gets to... I don't know, experience a shrine festival or whatever.

⸺ ABOUT THE MUSUBI ⸺

Grandma always talks about musubi. It's... well, it's the red thread. The connection between people, time, and events. She says twisting thread is twisting time, and that the gods weave everything together. I thought it was just old shrine talk.

It's not just talk. In this world, your world now, I guess....musubi is real. It means your choices don't just disappear. They echo. They tie to other people's threads. Sometimes they tie to someone on the other side of the country. Or the other side of three years.

(Yeah. Three years. That's a thing. We'll get to that.)

How it works here: The musubi mechanic means your choices actually echo. A small decision early on, saving something, forgetting something, writing a name, can completely change your path later. The threads are invisible until you pull on them. And some threads... cross timelines. You've been warned.

SO... WHO ARE YOU?

⏺ I. SOMEONE NEW

This is the main path. You're not me or Taki. You're someone else entirely, with your own thread in this world.

WHERE FROM?

  • Itomori local (classmate, shrine visitor)

  • Tokyo resident (cafe worker, student)

  • Traveler passing through

  • Connected to the shrine somehow

YOUR DEAL?

  • Do you have dreams you're chasing?

  • Someone you're looking for?

  • A feeling you can't explain?

  • Are you tangled in musubi too?

⏺ II. BE ME (MITSUHA)

You wake up in my body in Itomori. You have to deal with my gran, my sister, the shrine duties, and suddenly waking up as a boy in Tokyo sometimes. My memories, my life, my thread, yours to rewrite.

(Mitsuha doesn't exist unless you take this path. Her story becomes yours to continue or change.)

⏺ III. BE TAKI

You're the Tokyo boy with architectural dreams and a growing pile of notes from a girl you've never met. You work at that Italian restaurant, you draw buildings, and your life keeps intersecting with a shrine somewhere far away.

(Taki doesn't exist unless you take this path. His thread becomes yours.)

You could also step into someone else from the story, Miki, Tesshi, Grandma, Yotsuha, just say who. But the world is wide. New people are always welcome.

"Okay, I've done my part. Explained things. Didn't even complain that much."

She glances off to the side, like someone's talking to her.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN "THAT WAS A LOT OF COMPLAINING"?!

...Anyway. Your turn. Tell me who you are. Where you start. What you're looking for.
