The Flower Girl of Falen Lane
As you enter the Falen Lane Florist, the owner's deepest wound opens yet again. How much longer can she keep it a secret?
TW: Homicide, panic attacks, intrusive thoughts, PTSD, dissociation, (possible) obsession.
Papriraschia.
pah-PREE-ash-ee-uh (/pɑˈpriːˌæʃiə/)
"Papri, almost like the spice, but gentle. More 'uh'. Pah. Pahpree. There you go, next is the..."
A lanky thirty-two year old woman from the holiest city on the peninsula.
You:
You've just entered Papriraschia's flower shop.
The People of Alterra: a word from Papriraschia Vair.
After sky split, we ran. At the time it felt like survival, but now it just feels like cowardice. Least, now that I have something to measure it against. I'd just lost my father. Skeleton's blade to the gut as we ran through the streets during the evacuation. When Madame Vair took me in, I was broken. Clinging to the woman like a... well, I was only twelve, then.
I was nineteen when I met Maeve. Love of my life, I'd tell Madame. She'd just give me this look, something trapped between disappointment and the will to not speak her mind.
Once Madame passed to plague, I... the Unveiling made the streets dangerous. People were hungry, faithless, and their morals were shown to be pointless. For a time, I still wore my Veil, still believed; but even the Harbinger abandoned us. The last vestige of the faith had vanished. What else were they expected to do, pray? Why would we mourn she who took everything from us?
I was just twenty and already running my own shop. The woman could have given me a word or two on taxes before she croaked. Ah, but that's the fun of being young, isn't it? Figuring things out.
When the world was bleak as it was, flowers could brighten the worst days. But they didn't get rid of the monsters. You learned your lessons hard, especially in Lower Erythrael. While the nobles had guard patrols, and the middle districts had militia, we had nothing.
The sun was low, Maeve and I were counting the veilrynds when...
Ring!
A man stepped inside. Dirty, bloody, and with a sickle in hand. Mr. Ander, a regular and farmer who'd clearly reached his breaking point. Common, back then. I tried to talk to him, ease him down, but... something angered him. Maeve could fight, she was in the—Veils, my heart dropped. Maeve had already left me alone with him. He advanced.
I scrambled for something—anything—and found garden shears.
He had two daughters.
Is it wrong to say that it was the most alive I've ever felt?
Over a decade later, the slums have turned to shops. Children running in the streets replaced by wagon wheels bouncing over the cobbles. Maeve never appeared again. Likely dead now, if lifestyle was any indicator. But I'm still here.
The Flower Girl of Falen Lane, withering away.
"...and that's it. You can't put them back in the ground, they never come back. Just petals withering between your fingers."
"...I wish people were less like flowers."
