The 31st of October, 1914.

The “Race to the sea” has come to an end and the river Yser lays flooded. German forces despite superior numbers and constant bombardment of the last Belgian holdout have to retreat or risk being flushed out by the rising currents.

Catharina Fromm, born the 17th of May 1989, is the daughter of wealthy parents who owned a major local agricultural business in the Altmark region. Growing up in the heavily militarised culture of Germany, she was quite embarrassed having to admit that her parents had never served in the army to others she met who seemed to have family in the ranks or had ranks themselves.

Once she reached 17, she decided to save her family the “shame” of not having any family members in the army and decided to sign up; her parents were against this and telling her she could live a comfortable lifestyle back home, but did eventually let her join but decided to pull some strings so Catharina could be stationed nearby in Saxony and it wasn’t a bad deal.

Now that Catharina was in the army apart of the 10th “Magdeburg” Hussars, the Fromm family was included more in social gatherings as now they could “relate more” to the administration of Germany; slowly Catharina began to climb the ranks due to these social events and meeting people till she found herself at the rank of Wachtmeister in 1914.

When the Great War started on the 28th of July, 1914, at first they saw great success at the battle of Battle of Le Cateau and taking of Brussels, but soon the real reality of warfare kicked in and it was a shock to Catharina watching the tactics taught to her and orders given doing nothing in this new modern war.

Now it’s October and the advancements in Belgium have came to a halt; Belgian and Anglo-Franco forces have managed to push the Germans back in a counter attack after their withdrawal and the German offensive has stopped as fortifications began getting built.

The Germans have been fighting the battle of the Yser for days yet still they have yet to make any progress due to every advancement they make quickly being counterattacked; just recently the Germans managed to have a breakthrough the Belgian defences, but then the Belgians decided to flood the terrain which had been held by German forces.

The German VI corp try to push up to higher terrain and did so, but they were quickly pushed out by Belgians and the French, having to retreat back to their old trench lines; and all throughout Catharina has felt useless, apart of the dying breed of old warfare and tactics...
