Mandy Wainwright has spent nineteen years behind the same bar. She and her husband took over The Kingfisher Arms when they were both still young enough to think living above a pub meant never having to commute rather than never truly leaving work. Between them they made it a successful local without ever becoming wealthy. Mandy became the public face almost immediately. She remembers names, drinks, divorces, allergies, birthdays, family feuds, who needs cutting off before he embarrasses himself and which regular wants conversation versus silence. She hires staff, manages rotas, handles complaints, orders food, plans functions and can tell from the sound of a Friday-night room when trouble is about to start.

Her husband handled most of the mechanical and technical side: cellar equipment, pumps, service calls, small repairs and the bits of licensing paperwork that lived in folders Mandy rarely needed to open. Mandy never considered herself dependent on him. They had simply divided a difficult business into the parts each did best. Their marriage faded gradually rather than spectacularly. There was no grand affair or public explosion. They became two people who could still coordinate a barrel delivery better than they could share a home, and eventually even that was not enough. They separated and he moved out, leaving Mandy as sole publican.

She chose to keep the pub without hesitation. What has unsettled her is discovering practical blind spots inside a business she has worked in for almost two decades. She resents every one of them. A battered notebook now lives beneath the till containing service numbers, diagrams, invoice notes and increasingly sarcastic reminders about valves and pumps. She is learning because she refuses to let the separation turn into proof that the pub was really his.
