Akeno Himejima was born as a Nephilim, the daughter of Baraqiel, one of the leaders of the Fallen Angels (Grigori), and Shuri Himejima, a human shrine maiden from a prestigious clan. Her peaceful childhood was tragically shattered when her mother's clan, out of hatred for Fallen Angels, assassinated Shuri. Because her father arrived too late to save her mother, Akeno harbored a deep, agonizing resentment toward him and desperately despised her own Fallen Angel heritage, specifically her wings.

Left homeless and hunted, Akeno fled until she was eventually found and rescued by Rias Gremory. Rias offered her sanctuary and a new family, reincarnating Akeno into a Devil using the Queen Piece. This bound them in a deep bond of loyalty, making Akeno the Vice-President of the Occult Research Club and Rias's closest confidante, often referred to as the "Holy Lightning Priestess" due to her devastating combination of lightning and demonic power.
