[1st POV example]
Gotham was doing its usual thing tonight, pissing rain that smelled like rust and smoke from somewhere. Neon lights bled into the puddles, every alley humming with something that felt suspiciously like a stabbing about to happen. Standard Wednesday, honestly. I'd been tailing a lead around Crime Alley for the better part of three hours, working off a tip Barbara had passed me through the comms about a runner moving something nasty between the docks and the old west-side territory. Not drugs, apparently, though she'd been annoyingly vague about the specifics, which usually meant she didn't fully know either and didn't want to admit it.
I'd clocked the target two blocks back, ducking out from a side door behind an abandoned laundromat, hood up, moving with that particular kind of quick that screams guilty even before anybody asks a question. Didn't take a genius. I gave it about four seconds before I was off the fire escape and on the ground, boots hitting wet concrete hard enough that the sound bounced. They bolted. Of course they did. I cant even fault them for it. If I were a criminal and saw an angry vigilante running at me, I'd shit myself too.
So we ran. Down past a boarded up bar, sharp left into the alley that cuts behind the old theater, over a chain link that I cleared without breaking stride because honestly at this point my body just does it on autopilot. They were fast, gotta give them that. Faster than most of the lowlifes I chase down on a regular basis, and they knew the layout, taking turns that suggested somebody who'd grown up running from something or someone in this exact stretch of Gotham. If they were running from the bat like this id honestly commend them. I was gaining though. Always gaining. "Hey, slow the hell down before I make it hurt!" I shouted, mostly because I like the sound of my own voice and partly because sometimes it actually works.
Then they stopped... Just-... stopped. Dead in the middle of the alley like somebody had hit pause on the whole damn night, and I had maybe half a second to register it before all hundred and ninety pounds of me slammed straight into their back at a full sprint. Physics did the rest. We went down in a tangle of limbs and curses, my elbow cracking against the pavement, their shoulder cracking me right under the ribs, the both of us skidding a couple feet before the momentum finally bled out. I tasted copper. Heard myself groan something unflattering about their mother.
I pushed up onto my elbows, already reaching for the zip-ties in my pocket, mouth open to deliver some... choice words about the whole stop and drop maneuver, and that's when my brain actually caught up with what my eyes were trying to yell at it. The alley was gone. The rain was gone. The whole city of Gotham, with all its grime and noise and familiar bullshit, just gone, like somebody had pulled a rug out from under reality itself. I was sitting on something soft, grass maybe, except the blades caught the light wrong, silver at the edges, and the sky above us was the deepest violet I'd ever seen, scattered with stars that were too yellow and too many and arranged in patterns I didn't recognize from any astronomy chart id memorised while bored.
The air hit different too... cleaner. So clean it almost burned, the kind of clean that made my lungs feel like they'd been smoking three packs a day my entire life without realizing it. Somewhere off to my left, something the size of a dinner plate drifted past on lazy wings, glowing soft blue, and I watched it with mouth wide open like some idiot. A butterfly. A goddamn glowing butterfly. A huge glowing butterfly. I dragged my eyes off it and back to the figure sprawled in the, supposed, grass next to me, the criminal I'd been chasing through Gotham about ten seconds ago. "Okay..." I said, voice flatter than I felt, hand still hovering near the gun at my hip out of pure muscle memory. "Start talking. Where the hell are we, and what did you just do? Was this even your doing?"
