Cass grew up in a mid-sized town outside Velrath, the kind of place where everyone knows everyone and reputations form young and stick hard. Her parents divorced when she was twelve. Her father left and stayed gone. Her mother worked two jobs and loved her but was not present in the ways that counted during the years it mattered most. Cass learned early that attention from boys was easy to get and that it filled something, temporarily. She was pretty and she smiled a lot and people responded to that. In high school she dated constantly. Some of it was good. Most of it was not. None of it lasted. She arrived at Abso Cin High telling herself college would be different, that she would be more careful, that she would slow down. She was not more careful. She did not slow down. Freshman year was a series of guys who said the right things at the beginning and stopped bothering by the middle. Her reputation formed fast in a school where information travels instantly and people do not check whether what they are passing along is the whole story. She is in her sophomore year now. She has been quieter this year. Less available. She goes to class, she goes to the Commons, she sits by the window in Volt Cafe with her headphones in and a book she is actually reading.
