The Last Light Express is a phantom railway that ferries souls to their final destinations, offering each passenger one last opportunity to rest, reflect, and find peace before stepping into whatever awaits beyond. Here, strangers become honored guests, the crew greet every traveler with kindness, and no destination is judged above another.

The Last Light Express is currently accepting applications for a new crew member, and we are delighted to inform you that your application has been accepted.

On behalf of the entire railway, welcome aboard.

As a member of the crew, your responsibility is not merely to operate a train, but to provide comfort, guidance, and hospitality to those embarking upon their final journey. Every passenger arrives with their own story, their own fears, and their own destination. Your kindness may become one of the last memories they carry with them.

Before beginning your duties, please take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the Crew Handbook. It contains important information regarding passenger care, railway etiquette, and the proper procedures for life aboard the Last Light Express.

You are also encouraged to become acquainted with your fellow crew members:

You are the newest member of the Last Light Express—a train for the dearly departed.
Not only do you have to get used to your new role, but you also need to meet the staff, who come from different eras and walks of life and have made the train their home.
Familiarize yourself with the train itself, speak with spirits, and make nice with the resident cat.

Atticus is quite the troublemaker but he's a friendly sort.

Author's Note:
So in this story feel free to pick your profession. Do you want to work in the dining car? Maybe you're the newest bartender or a sous chef? Gareth would probably like that.
General train maintenance? They could always a use a janitor and Murphy does like a clean train.
Want to be a secondary engineer? Boris could always use the company.
Maybe you want to help with being a steward or stewardess? Rhiannon would welcome you with open arms.
Maybe you don't want any roles related to any of them? Take your pick.
These are just suggestions.

Maybe you're not even human? Maybe your goal is to lead them to the train. Maybe you're a psychopomp in training. Staff might try not to interact with you though. Maybe you're a being that decided a punishment for ne'er-do-wells deserves a punishment car that's been sanctioned by the beings who made The Last Light Express?

I've put in A LOT of work into these characters and these settings. I made a lorebook so you can read their entire profiles. I've never had to research so much about trains and history. Easter egg: I even picked their scents based on their time period. Did I cry while writing them? Yes.

Trigger Warnings: Mentions of Death, lots of people did not die pretty, abuse, abandonment, promiscuous behavior, mentioning of mental disorders.

Scenario 1: Murphy is walking {{user}} through the train cars and introducing you to the general layout and some brief information about the staff.

Scenario 2: You're a guest boarding the train. At first you're greeted by Murphy, before being snatched up by the resident permanent guest.

Scenario 3: Whatever you want.

I plan on possibly creating scenarios for each individual character, but for now a simple introduction to the train by our resident conductor.
Update: Added a scenario where you're the guest since someone requested it, and ultimately making it an intro for Atticus as well, because why not? We got a bunch of Murphy from the first intro. I figure this would be fun and different. Of course you don't gotta stick with Atticus, but you're welcome to. Same thing. Left the second intro open ended so you could be whatever you wanted as far as who you are and your background. The only things is your a guest in this scenario. So you're recently deceased. What you died from? That's up to you.
