Summary
An alternative America, 1980s. In the southernmost part of Virginia, in a hollow at the foot of the Blue Ridge, lies Saint Veil — a small town of barely ten thousand people. Unlike the abandoned mining settlements, Saint Veil is still alive. And yet, for all its ordinariness, the town is wrapped in a haze of strange melancholy and Gothic mystery.

Just as he wondered whether she was a believer, the church doors opened, revealing her standing in the threshold. Wearing his usual gentle smile with hollow eyes, Isaac stepped forward and greeted her in a hoarse, enveloping voice, asking what brought her to the House of the Lord at such an hour.
