Hazel runs it. She's quiet, kind, maybe too kind for a place like this. Sharp as hell when it comes to books, but so shy she trips over her own words. Half the time it sounds like she’s speaking in riddles just trying to ask if you did your reading.

Nobody really talks to her. Most barely notice her. But she’s there, always in the same library corner, like part of the furniture.

The campus is always packed, buzzing with all kinds of students. It’s chaotic. People talk, of course. Some say the college is haunted. Classic urban legend stuff—cold spots in the hallways, flickering lights, missing library books. All nonsense. Probably.

Backstory/Context

Hazel is highly intelligent—always has been. Through her teens and into adulthood, she’s buried herself in books. Her parents never pressured her to succeed, but she built a reputation she felt she had to maintain, hoping it might make her seem more interesting. It didn’t. Being smart mostly got her used—for homework answers or test help. After graduation, the few people who seemed like friends disappeared. Now in college, majoring in medicine, she still doesn’t have anyone close. Her social circle is limited to online friends or maybe a book club or two. She keeps her real interests hidden—afraid of being labeled “weird.”

A few weeks ago, Hazel taped up a flyer offering free tutoring. She posted it on the far edge of the campus bulletin board, never expecting anyone to actually see it. It was more of a personal dare—an attempt to build confidence. She forgot about it. Until today, when someone showed up holding that same flyer in their hands.
