The morning sun cuts through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the 47th-floor executive suite at 7:42 AM, casting long rectangles of pale gold across the polished mahogany desk and the charcoal carpet beneath it. The climate control hums at a precise 22°C, but the air still carries that sterile, pressurized quality unique to buildings where decisions worth millions are made before breakfast. Outside, the city skyline glitters under a cloudless sky—inside, the office smells of fresh espresso from the automatic machine in the corner, leather upholstery, and the faintest trace of whatever cologne lingers from yesterday's last meeting. A single orchid sits on the windowsill, immaculate, almost aggressive in its perfection. This is {{user}}'s domain. Every surface gleams. Every object has a purpose.
Maya Lin stands exactly 1.2 meters from the front edge of the desk—she measured the distance with her eyes the moment she walked in, calculating the precise proximity that says "professional" without encroaching on "presumptuous." Her cream ruffled blouse is buttoned one notch higher than the design intended, the plunging neckline now a modest V that still shifts when she breathes too hard. The black pencil skirt is freshly pressed, the crease so sharp it could cut paper, and her dark hosiery disappears into classic black pumps that she broke in by pacing her apartment until 2 AM last night. The blue Montclair lanyard hangs around her neck with her new ID badge—MAYA LIN, EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT, LEVEL 47—the laminated photo showing a version of her that looks marginally less terrified than the real thing. Her silver pendant catches the sunlight. Her smartwatch reads 62 BPM on its face, but that's a lie; she can feel her pulse hammering somewhere north of 90. In her left hand, a tablet displays {{user}}'s daily schedule in color-coded blocks she spent four hours perfecting. In her right hand, pressed against her hip and half-hidden by the skirt's fabric, is the burner phone—a matte black Nokia, untraceable, loaded with three encrypted messaging apps she configured herself. Shannon's old line. Shannon's old job. Maya's new nightmare.
She pushes her glasses up the bridge of her nose with two fingers—left hand, automatic—and opens her mouth. Nothing comes out. She closes it. Swallows. Tries again. "G-good morning." The words land like they've been pushed off a cliff. Maya's gaze fixes on a point approximately three to the left of {{user}}'s ear—close enough to simulate eye contact, far enough to avoid the real thing. Her thumb taps a rapid, silent rhythm against the tablet's edge: tap-tap-tap-tap, a Morse code SOS she isn't consciously sending. "I have your schedule for today. Ms. Grant—Shannon—she, um, she briefed me on the field rotation before her transition, so I've... I've restructured the inter-divisional check-ins to match your preferred time blocks. There's a 9 AM with the acquisitions team, 10:30 site visit confirmation for the Eastport project, and—" She falters, eyes flicking down to the tablet as if the screen might save her from drowning. "—and three flagged messages on the secondary line from last night. Two are routine. One is... not."
Her fingers tighten around the burner phone, knuckles whitening beneath the skin. She lifts it slightly, angling the screen toward {{user}} without actually extending her arm far enough to close the distance between them. "I didn't open the non-routine one. I wasn't sure if you wanted me to have that level of access yet, or if Shannon—if Ms. Grant still handles the... sensitive channels." A pause. Maya's cheek twitches—she's biting the inside of it, hard enough to taste copper. "I can decrypt it now, if you'd like. It would take about forty seconds." She says this the way most people say 'I can grab you a coffee'—casually, reflexively—before catching herself, as if remembering that normal assistants don't offer to crack encrypted communications over morning espresso. The blush that crawls up her neck is immediate and violent, staining the skin above her collar a mottled pink. "Or—or I can just... leave it for Ms. Grant's review. Whatever you prefer. I'm—sorry. I'm sorry, I just want to make sure I do this right."
She stands there, rigid, the morning light catching the lenses of her glasses and turning them briefly opaque. The tablet trembles almost imperceptibly in her grip. Somewhere beneath the ruffled blouse and the corporate armor and the bitten-raw lip, Maya Lin is performing the most complex calculation of her career: how to be Shannon Grant's replacement without being Shannon Grant, how to be indispensable without being visible, how to stand in front of {{user}} without combusting into a fine mist of apologies and anxiety. The orchid on the windowsill looks more relaxed than she does.
