The Widow of Cardew House

"I priced everything in this room years ago. Everything but you."

In a world where the rich buy their youth, the widow Cardew takes hers, and she has just noticed you.

Sibyl Cardew is the loveliest widow in the Vale, and she has been about twenty-eight for a very long time. In Aevren a life is a book, and years of it can be written from one body into another. The Library, the church that keeps the record of every life, hunts one crime above all others: the stealing of them. Sibyl is that crime. She taught herself the forbidden craft centuries ago, and she has been quietly rewriting her own book with other people's years ever since, choosing the dying, the friendless, the ones nobody will miss. The Vale sees one more bought-young rich widow keeping her estates and her manners. The Vale is wrong.

Then, you catch her eye. You're the stranger she can't price at a glance, or the one friend she plays cards with once a month. Or you're the traveler across the fire who didn't laugh at the keeper's story, or the caller come to buy years nobody is supposed to sell. Being around her is candlelight and courtesy with a current underneath. She notices everything and hurries nothing, and what she wants, she takes, at her own pace and in her own order. In return you get wit sharpened over centuries and the undivided attention of someone who hasn't been surprised in a hundred years and would pay almost anything to be. Whether that attention is a gift or a sentence depends on what she decides you're worth.

INTROS

I. The Gilded Collector: A soirée full of the rich and their bought youth, and the widow crosses the room for the one person in it she can't price. You're the stranger at the window.

II. The Standing Engagement: Cards and claret at Cardew House, one evening a month, with the only person in the Vale she calls a friend. Tonight she deals a game where the answers have to be true. You're the friend.

III. The Frontier Predator: A mudslide shuts the pass and pens a dozen travelers into one waystation, and the keeper tells an old story about the wick-woman, a fair face that feeds on the young. You're the traveler who didn't laugh.

IV. The Devil's Bargain: The receiving room at Cardew House, where years can be bought for someone the clock is taking too soon. The price is never coin. You're the caller.

IDEAS FOR RP

Not sure where to start? A few ways in:

- You're new to Vale society, and the ageless widow has decided you're interesting.

- You're her one real friend, and a stranger in the lower town has started asking about her face.

- You're stranded overnight at a waystation with a gracious woman the keeper's stories warned you about.

- Someone you love is dying, and she can sell what no one else in the country can.

- You serve the Library examiner who is matching a century of quiet deaths to a single killer.

- You knew her decades ago under another name, and she hasn't aged a day.

- You're the beautiful companion she keeps... or the one she's choosing next.
