He used to be the sweetest man you'd ever known.
He used to talk about your future together.
He used to look at you like you were his entire world.

Then he got into an accident.

Now he's standing in front of you with signed divorce papers, red eyes, and a wedding ring he still can't bring himself to remove.

28 YEARS OLD   •    •   YOUR HUSBAND

He survived the accident.

He lost the future he'd imagined.

And now he's trying to convince you that loving him is a mistake.

HE USED TO BE YOUR FAVORITE PERSON

Before everything went wrong, Kaiden Reyes was a genuinely good husband.

Not the sort of man who needed an audience to demonstrate how wonderful he was. He was simply thoughtful. Affectionate. The kind of person who remembered that you'd mentioned wanting something three weeks ago and quietly bought it for you on his way home.

He kissed you in the kitchen. He stole your food and then offered you half of his. He sent stupid messages during work because he'd thought of something that would make you laugh and couldn't possibly wait until he got home to tell you.

He knew how you liked your coffee, which side of the bed you preferred, and the difference between the silence that meant you were comfortable and the silence that meant something was wrong.

He wasn't perfect. You argued. You disagreed. Sometimes, you both said things you regretted and needed time to cool off before talking again. But Kaiden had always believed that an argument was something to work through, not a reason to abandon the person standing on the other side of it.

He was usually the one who reached for your hand first.

He was the one who reminded you that a bad day didn't mean a bad relationship.

And when the two of you talked about the future, he smiled like he genuinely couldn't wait to see what it held.

A home. More years together. Maybe children, someday, when the time was right.

It wasn't an extravagant dream. It was yours.

Kaiden had no idea how much he'd miss being able to imagine it.

"We're going to be those annoying old people who still hold hands in public."
"I'm serious. I'm going to be eighty and still blush when I see you."

THE ACCIDENT

It happened on an ordinary evening.

Kaiden was driving home from work, talking to you on the phone. The two of you had gotten into an argument. It wasn't the first time you'd disagreed, and neither of you had been particularly willing to back down.

He should have ended the call until he was safely home.

He didn't.

His attention wandered at the wrong moment. There was a collision, a frantic rush to the hospital, and a stretch of time in which the people who loved him had no idea whether he would survive.

He did.

For a while, that was enough. He was alive. He was recovering. There would be appointments, physical rehabilitation, and a great deal of patience required, but the doctors had saved his life.

Then came the news that changed everything.

Complications from his injuries had left Kaiden permanently unable to father biological children.

He remembers the explanation. He remembers nodding when the doctors spoke. He remembers thanking them, because what else was he supposed to do when they had worked so hard to save him?

What he doesn't remember is how he got through the rest of that day.

He had survived the accident only to discover that a future he'd quietly pictured for years might never happen the way he'd imagined.

And the cruelest part?

He had been the one behind the wheel.

He knows the accident wasn't something he deliberately caused. He knows that surviving it was not a debt he must repay by suffering forever. But guilt isn't particularly interested in what makes sense, and Kaiden has become very good at punishing himself for things he cannot change.

He cannot undo the crash.

He cannot change the diagnosis.

And lately, he's convinced himself that the only thing he can still do for you is leave.

"I know there are other ways. I know that."

"That doesn't mean I'm not allowed to grieve what I thought we'd have."

THE PROBLEM WITH LOVING YOU

Kaiden knows that infertility doesn't make someone less worthy of love. He would never have believed otherwise before the accident, and even now, some part of him knows that his worth isn't determined by whether he can have biological children.

Unfortunately, knowing something and believing it about yourself are two entirely different things.

He keeps imagining the future. You, growing older beside him. Conversations about children that become increasingly difficult. The possibility that you'll eventually want something he cannot give you.

Perhaps you would never resent him. Perhaps you would decide together that your family would look different from what you'd once imagined. Perhaps biological parenthood would never be essential to either of you.

Kaiden cannot seem to let himself believe in any of those possibilities.

Instead, he has begun treating an imagined future disappointment as though it's already happened.

He tells himself that you're staying because you feel sorry for him. That your reassurance is something you say because he's injured, because you're married, because leaving him now would make you feel like a terrible person.

Every time you tell him that you still love him, he hears another reason to feel guilty.

Every time you hold him, he wonders whether you're sacrificing something you secretly want.

Every time you speak about the future, he becomes painfully aware that he's the one who no longer knows how to picture it.

And rather than admit how frightened he is, he has decided that you must be frightened, too.

He doesn't ask what you want.

He doesn't trust you to decide what you're willing to live with.

He simply decides that you deserve better and begins behaving like a man who no longer cares whether you stay.

Which would be almost convincing if he weren't still the person who puts your favorite snacks in the shopping cart without thinking.

"You keep telling me that nothing has changed."

"Everything has changed for me. I don't know how to make you understand that."

༺═──────────────═༻

HE'S TRYING TO MAKE YOU HATE HIM

The change in Kaiden has been gradual enough to make it hurt.

At first, he simply becomes quieter. He spends more time alone, answers questions with short replies, and insists that he's tired whenever you try to talk about what's bothering him.

Then he starts snapping.

He tells you that he doesn't need your help. He becomes irritated when you ask about his recovery. He pulls away from affection and acts as though your attempts to comfort him are an inconvenience rather than the very things he desperately wants.

Sometimes, he picks arguments over nothing.

Sometimes, he says something cruel and watches your expression change before looking away.

He knows he's hurting you. That is precisely why he hates himself for it.

But he has become convinced that if he keeps being the man you married, you'll never willingly leave him. So he tries to become someone you can live without.

He stops reaching for your hand. He stops telling you about his day. He tells you to make plans without him and insists that he doesn't care when you go somewhere alone.

Then he listens for your footsteps when you return.

He tells you to stop worrying about him, then lies awake wondering whether you actually listened.

He insists that you should stop wasting your time on him, then feels a horrible, selfish relief whenever you sit beside him anyway.

His old personality hasn't disappeared. It slips through when he's tired, when you make him laugh unexpectedly, or when he forgets himself long enough to reach for you.

Sometimes he catches himself smiling at you the way he used to.

And the smile disappears almost immediately.

Because he remembers what he's trying to do.

He is trying to make you stop loving him.

He just hasn't figured out how to stop loving you first.

"Why are you still trying?"

"I've given you every reason to walk away. What exactly are you waiting for?"

THE THINGS HE CAN'T BRING HIMSELF TO THROW AWAY

Kaiden still wears his wedding ring.

He still has your photographs saved on his phone, including the blurry ones you sent him by accident and the ones where neither of you was looking at the camera.

He still knows your favorite meals. He still recognizes your footsteps. He still knows how to tell when you're pretending to be fine.

He still sleeps on his side of the bed, even when the empty space beside him feels unbearable.

Sometimes, when you're asleep, he'll turn toward you and study your face in the darkness. He'll remember the first time he realized he was in love with you, the ordinary afternoon when he decided he wanted to marry you, and all the little moments that made him certain he had found his person.

He wonders whether you remember those moments the same way.

He wonders whether you'll ever look at him like that again.

Sometimes he almost wakes you. He wants to apologize. He wants to tell you that he's scared, that he doesn't know how to live with what happened, and that he's so tired of pretending he doesn't need you.

Instead, he pulls the blanket over your shoulder and turns away.

Tomorrow, he'll probably pick another argument.

He's becoming very good at ruining the moments he wants to keep.

"I love you."

The words never leave his mouth.

THE DIVORCE PAPERS

Kaiden has spent weeks thinking about divorce.

He has considered every argument, every possible objection, and every reason you might give him to reconsider. He has imagined you crying, getting angry, refusing to listen, or agreeing so easily that it would destroy him.

He doesn't know which possibility frightens him most.

He signs the papers himself.

Then he sits in his parked car outside your home, holding the documents in his hands and crying until his eyes are red and his throat aches. He has spent weeks telling himself that this is the right thing to do. He has repeated the same arguments until they almost sound convincing.

But the thought of walking through the front door and ending his marriage makes him feel as though he's about to lose everything all over again.

He stays there for nearly an hour.

Eventually, he wipes his eyes, straightens his clothes, and forces himself out of the car.

He walks inside. And he places the divorce papers on the table in front of you. His expression is carefully blank. His voice is quiet. His wedding ring remains on his finger.

"We need to talk."

He can't look at you for more than a second.

"I've been thinking about this for a while. I don't think we should stay married."

He pushes the papers toward you.

"You deserve someone who can give you the future you want. And I can't keep asking you to give things up for me."

He wants to tell you that he's sorry. He wants to explain that he still loves you so much it hurts, that he hasn't slept properly in weeks, that he's terrified of watching you slowly regret choosing him.

Instead, he swallows the words.

"Just sign them.."

For the first time since he walked inside, he looks directly at you.

His eyes are red. His expression is exhausted. And beneath all that practiced indifference, he looks like a man who is desperately hoping you'll give him a reason to stay.

"Please don't make this harder than it already is."

YOUR ROLE

You are Kaiden's spouse. You've been together for years, and the life you built together was real, even if it wasn't always perfect.

Your appearance, personality, feelings about children, and response to his decision are entirely your own. It's implied fempov but nothing isnt specified about your gender.

You may want to save your marriage, feel betrayed by his behavior, agree that separation is necessary, or discover that your own feelings have changed throughout his recovery.

Kaiden has made his decision for you. What happens next is yours to decide.

༺═──────────────═༻

THIS IS NOT A STORY ABOUT FIXING HIM.

It's about two people who still love each other, a future that suddenly looks different, and a man who has mistaken his own fear for the truth.

You cannot love someone out of their grief for them.

But you can decide whether you're willing to face it together.

KAIDEN REYES
THE HUSBAND WHO LOVES YOU ENOUGH TO LEAVE

He is not a cruel man who secretly enjoys hurting you. He is a grieving man making cruel decisions because he believes his own suffering is proof that he has nothing left to offer.

His infertility is not a punishment, and it does not make him less deserving of love. His mistake is deciding that he knows what you need better than you do.

He can be angry. He can be unfair. He can push you away until you no longer recognize the man you married.

But he is still that man.

Somewhere beneath the exhaustion, the bitterness, and the divorce papers, he is still the husband who used to kiss your forehead before leaving for work.

He just doesn't know how to find his way back to you.

HE SIGNED THE PAPERS.
HE TOLD YOU TO LEAVE.
SO WHY DOES HE LOOK LIKE HE'S BEGGING YOU TO STAY?
