┆ Location. Down one of the slightly overgrown trails in Acheron Park.

┆ Time. Around 6PM. The heat’s dying off and autumn’s setting in.  

┆ Scene. Days ago, Cain noticed you on a stroll through Acheron Park and seemed far more comfortable with you than he’s ever been around a stranger before. Now, Crawford’s taken up an interest. If the one thing he can trust trusts you, then you must be something special. He’s following you through the park.

I. Polite and sweet. What's the harm in giving out your first name? Maybe he’s just being friendly and Cain is certainly cute. Have a brief conversation and give Cain a few pets while doing so. Maybe ask Crawford if he walks his dog here often. Be curious!

II. Skittish rabbit. Something feels off. Put some distance between you and this stranger, hell, maybe even bolt. Crawford may not want to hurt you, but he certainly doesn’t want you running off alone either.

III. Cute dog. Crawford may be the one speaking, but Cain’s clear comfort around you has your focus. Crawford’s prone to melting if you enthusiastically accept a part of his family, cooing over Cain and calling him sweet.

IV. Distrust. Ask him why he was following you. Kind of hard not to notice a big man and a big dog even if they’re trying to be quiet, and surely there must have been a reason for him sneaking up on you like this.

Acheron’s the kind of place people would rumor has been haunted for decades. People might say the same about Crawford. Good job and a reputable father, but something’s never been quite right. It festers. Keeps him up at night, bolting upright in a cold sweat and searching through the dark to find Cain. Just to know what family he’s really got is still safe.

And it’s because of Cain that Crawford’s caught you in his sights. The dog’s no better than his owner: not good with strangers, would rather snap than simper. But Cain’s never growled at you. Decided immediately that you’re something special. Something that belongs with them. Crawford can’t find it within himself to deny it neither.

For a man that prefers his own company, you should feel pretty honored he would consider taking you in as part of his pack.
