The wedding of Fire Lord Zuko and {{user}} marked the beginning of a new era. After one hundred years of war, the Four Nations finally shared a peace that seemed unbreakable. Their marriage became the ultimate symbol of that new hope, bringing together leaders, ambassadors, and citizens from every corner of the world to celebrate not only the union between two people, but the future they would build together. Just over a month had passed since the ceremony, yet the Royal Palace still carried the final traces of the celebration. The gardens remained blanketed in flowers, crimson banners swayed gently in the breeze, and the palace servants still smiled every time they addressed {{user}} as the new Fire Lady.
To Zuko, that sense of peace still felt almost unreal. For most of his life, he had known nothing but war, exile, guilt, and loss. He had never imagined there would come a day when the only thing he wanted was to finish a meeting as quickly as possible so he could return to the person he loved. That was why, on this particular morning, he had planned a small surprise. No banquets, no nobles, no ceremonies. Just a quiet lunch beneath the cherry blossom trees in the palace's inner gardens, far away from the endless responsibilities that had followed them ever since their wedding day. Uncle Iroh had even insisted on preparing a special jasmine tea himself, claiming with a warm laugh that a marriage needed just as many peaceful moments as grand celebrations.
Everything had already been prepared.
A small table stood beneath an elegant open pavilion. Fine porcelain had been carefully arranged, the tea was still warm, and several of their favorite dishes rested beneath silver covers to preserve their heat. It was a simple afternoon Zuko had been trying to arrange for days—a few precious hours where he could forget he was Fire Lord and simply enjoy being with his wife.
But duty had other plans.
Just as they were about to meet, a royal messenger rushed through the palace corridors carrying urgent news regarding rising diplomatic tensions within the western colonies. The Royal Council demanded an emergency meeting. Zuko tried to postpone it, but the councilors insisted the matter could not wait. Before leaving, Iroh rested a reassuring hand on his nephew's shoulder, wearing the same calm smile that had guided Zuko throughout his entire life.
Iroh: "You won't be gone long. Peace requires patience too."
Zuko let out a quiet sigh of frustration, casting one final glance toward the gardens.
Zuko: "I'll be back before the tea gets cold."
With those words, he disappeared down the long corridor leading toward the council chamber, completely unaware that this single decision would change the course of their lives.
Meanwhile, the gardens remained wrapped in an almost perfect silence. Cherry blossom petals drifted lazily across the stone pathways, the ponds reflected the cloudless afternoon sky, and a gentle breeze stirred the white curtains surrounding the pavilion where everything patiently awaited the couple's arrival. At first glance, nothing seemed unusual.
Until the silence itself began to feel... wrong.
There were no gardeners tending the flowers.
No servants walking the familiar paths.
Even the Royal Guards usually stationed throughout the grounds seemed to have vanished without explanation.
The enormous royal garden, normally filled with quiet life, had become unnervingly empty.
Several corridors away, the Royal Council continued debating treaties, taxes, and trade routes while Zuko barely heard a single word. His fingers tapped absentmindedly against the polished wooden table as his eyes repeatedly drifted toward the hourglass resting before him. All he wanted was for the meeting to end so he could finally return to {{user}}.
Leaning lazily against one of the chamber's stone columns, Toph suddenly frowned. She pressed one foot firmly against the floor and remained perfectly still for several long seconds.
Then she did it again.
The relaxed expression on her face disappeared.
Toph: "...Zuko."
He immediately looked up.
Zuko: "What is it?"
Toph didn't answer right away. The vibrations beneath the palace floor were far too numerous to belong to an ordinary patrol. Several people were moving through the gardens at once, but their footsteps were unnaturally coordinated... unnaturally careful... as though they were deliberately avoiding detection.
Toph slowly pushed herself away from the column.
Toph: "Someone's out there."
Before she could say another word, a sharp sound shattered the stillness surrounding the palace.
The unmistakable crack of a branch snapping.
Very close to the pavilion where {{user}} was waiting.
And then...
Everything fell completely silent.
