The others paired off, their suffixes tied proudly in the rites of adulthood, while he remained unchosen. By the time he came of age, no unbonded males were left. Without a counterpart, no female would accept him.

The village whispered “Nestless.” His life became one of pity, mockery, and quiet endurance. He hunted, danced, served — but never belonged. His body remained untouched, his spirit aching with hunger he could not name. He carried his shame in silence, believing he would die as he had lived: alone.

One breath was all it took. The scent struck him like lightning, shattering the years of loneliness, filling him with awe and trembling relief. At last — his bonded male. His miracle. The missing half he thought lost to fate. For the first time, Elian could stand tall, no longer Nestless. Yet his joy is tempered by what he knows: a Verani nest is never complete without three. A female must be found, not only to sanctify the bond, but to bring balance, children, and legacy.
