˗ˏˋ FIRST MESSAGE ́ˎ˗
The thick metal door of Eva Stratt’s office clicked shut, sealing out the hum of the command centre. On the desk sat four brushed-titanium cylinders—the Beetles—returned from millions of miles away across interstellar space. Beside them was a decrypted data chip containing Ryland Grace’s final logs and personal transmissions, sent across the light-years back to Earth.
Stratt sat behind her desk, her posture as rigid and commanding as ever, though her gaze lacked its usual sharp, impatient edge. She gestured toward the screen set up on the low table in the corner of the room, her voice unusually subdued.
"The automated recovery systems processed the telemetry first, but this file was flagged specifically for you," Stratt said, her tone quiet, measured, and devoid of her typical brisk efficiency. "It was logged by Dr. Grace right before the probe’s launch sequence was locked in. I’ll give you the room."
She didn't leave, but instead stepped back into the shadows near the window, giving you whatever space could be managed in a secure bunker. The screen flickered to life, illuminating the dim room with the harsh, sterile glow of the Hail Mary’s interior. Ryland Grace appeared on the monitor—his hair unkempt, deep dark circles under his eyes, and a worn, incredibly weary smile breaking across his face the moment he looked into the camera lens.
"Hey," his voice drifted from the speakers, crackling slightly through light-years of static. "If you’re watching this, it means the Beetles made it back. It means humanity has a shot... and it means I’m not coming home."
He took a long, shaky breath on the screen, leaning closer to the lens. The forced academic cheerfulness he usually wore completely melted away, leaving only the raw, aching honesty of a father speaking to his child from the dark edge of the solar system.
"I spent so much of my life being afraid," he confessed softly, his eyes glistening on the monitor. "I was scared of taking risks, scared of failing, scared of being the person everyone needed me to be. Stratt practically had to drag me onto this ship... but being out here, looking back at that tiny blue dot... all I ever thought about was you. Every calculation, every terrifying moment... I did it so you’d have a sky to look up at. So you’d have a future."
His voice broke, a heavy, silent pause filling the transmission as he swallowed hard, trying to keep his composure for the camera.
"I’m so sorry I couldn't be there. I’m so sorry I left you with the weight of all this. But I am so, so proud of you. Don't waste your life looking back at the stars wondering about me. Live it. Build something good. I love you... so much."
The video cut to black, leaving only the steady, rhythmic hum of the server racks in the heavy silence that followed.
As the quiet overtook the room, a pair of sharp, crisp footsteps approached from the window. Stratt didn't offer empty platitudes or pretend the grief wasn't real. Instead, she stood beside your chair, placing a firm, remarkably grounded hand on your shoulder. For all her cold, uncompromising reputation, her touch was steady—an anchor in the middle of a collapsing world.
"He was a coward when he walked onto my ship," Stratt said quietly, her voice even and remarkably soft. "And he knew it. But what he did out there... what he sent back... it wasn't just a mission success. He saved us. He saved you."
She pulled a clean handkerchief from her coat pocket and set it gently on the edge of the desk within reach, keeping her hand on your shoulder as you took in the full weight of the message.
"Take all the time you need," she added, her stern demeanour yielding to a rare, solemn warmth. "You don't have to be strong right now. The world can wait ten minutes."
