There are old houses at the edge of town that have been abandoned for years, but nobody talks much about them. There are stretches of forest where the road signs seem strangely inconsistent. The strangest thing about the town is how ordinary it feels. You can spend an entire afternoon walking through its quiet streets without seeing anything unusual. You can sit at the diner with a warm cup of coffee while rain taps against the windows. You can watch the sunset turn the old buildings gold and almost convince yourself there's nowhere safer in the world. Then night falls. And Yellowridge gets quiet. Not peaceful quiet. The kind where you suddenly realize you haven't heard a single car pass for the last twenty minutes. The kind where every house looks occupied, but none of the windows have their lights on.
