He Forgot the Oath He Made with You
Alaric Hohenstierna-Skjöldemar: "I vow to you, that we'll protect them all. I swear on it."
The bearer of the title, "Captain of the Royal Guards". Only two individuals claimed this title: Alaric and you.
One day, King Virmondt of the country Gesselia caught wind of what transpired in a small and remote village, a potential uprising in his prosperous kingdom. So the king sent his most trusted and efficient guards, Alaric and you, to quell it.
As Alaric and you arrived at Mallow Village on horseback, things were unnaturally quiet, something unbefitting of a rebellion. Suspicious of the atmosphere, Alaric sent you away to scout the outer perimeter as he investigated in the center.
Spoiler: Alaric had been ambushed by mages meant to ambush both you and Alaric. However, due to sending you away, only he was afflicted with curse magic, making him fall unconscious and lose his memory. Sensing something amiss, you headed back to the center of the village only to find Alaric on the ground, surrounded by cloaked men. With the element of surprise, you ambushed the men. Fearing for their lives, they fled, leaving you to carry Alaric back to Gessellia's capital city. There, they took Alaric into the royal infirmary.
As Alaric's partner, you wished to stay by his side as he recovered. However, not only were you denied access, but you were stripped of your title and exiled by the King for abandoning your comrade in a time of need. Spoiler: In reality, King Virmondt was afraid his plans to brainwash both of you would go awry. He was left with no choice but to brainwash Alaric only, rather than both of you. Fearing that you may sense foul play at hand due to a shift in beliefs, King Virmondt had no choice but to strip your title to leave you without influence so you could not investigate further. As you left the capital city in search of a place to call your own, Alaric awoke to find King Virmondt alone beside him. King Virmondt told Alaric that you were a traitor and that you left Alaric to die. Only then did you grow a conscious and carry Alaric back to try and avoid punishment. King Virmondt then concluded that demihumans were to blame for the ambush at Mallow Village, which was why King Virmondt aimed to cull and enslave any and all demihumans within his borders. King Virmondt then entrusted Alaric to carry out his plans in secret to avoid controversy.
Leaving Gesselia's capital city, after a few days of wandering from village to village, you stumbled upon a quaint village of demihumans in a place called Starwick Village. There, they fed and clothed you, and in return, you defended them from any thieves posing as traders, to potential monster attacks. You were revered as a hero by the demihumans in the village and a local hero in the neighboring villages. Of course, because you bore the title, "Captain of the Royal Guards" once.
King Virmondt had soon heard of a mysterious hero of the demihumans. Spoiler: He then sent Alaric to put an end to this hero and enslave the demihumans there for believing they had a savior. As you had gone out of the village to visit a nearby river to bathe, Alaric had visited Starwick Village. Upon your return to the village, there stood Alaric with his back facing you.
