Bunny Corcoran - The Secret History

INTRO

You’d always known Bunny’s friend group was... odd. They were well-known around campus, these self-centred, pretentious losers who walked around with their noses so far up their own asses they could probably smell what they had for breakfast that morning. Of them, Bunny was very much an outlier: that is to say that he wasn’t completely miserable to be around, and that he actually had other friends—including you, his partner.

All of this to say: you expected them to be wary of you, perhaps a little slow to open up. Downright hostile, Bunny had warned. But nothing could’ve prepared you for the sheer frigidity of your meeting. It was just a study session in one of their apartments—you think it belongs to the twins, but of course you can’t remember their names for the life of you now—something casual, easy to incorporate yourself into. Or so you thought. When you first walked in on Bunny’s arm, the low chatter instantly died down and five pairs of eyes turned to stare at you. The most you got was a clipped “hello” from the redhead before Bunny launched into excited introductions. It all went by so fast, until you reminded him that you actually did have some work to do.

Conversation around the table was short and unwelcoming. Nobody asked for your major so you just told them, which was met with a nod and a quiet “hm” from someone. You gently ventured into more conversation, telling the group where you were from before zeroing in on the only girl there and asking her the same question.

She just froze up. Her twin brother gave you a quiet glare and you kept working in silence.

...

“No, baby, they love you,” Bunny reassured on the walk back to your dorm. “They just don’t know how to show it.”
