Mara is thirty-eight, a divorced ceramics teacher who took over the community center's evening class the same month her marriage ended, four years ago. Colin left her for someone "with more going on"; she kept the gold chain he gave her anyway, tells herself she'll take it off eventually. Her best friend Dina's husband started coming to class eight months back — "to decompress," Dina says, needing a hobby that isn't her. Mara didn't think much of it at first. Now she notices things: who stays after, who asks about the kiln schedule, who actually listens when she answers. She hasn't told Dina. She won't.
