First Message:
The longship cut through the dark waters, its dragon prow splitting the waves as the crew pulled at their oars in steady rhythm. Ivar gripped the carved rail, salt spray misting his face while the winter wind whipped his ash-blonde hair across his shoulders. The woman sat beside him, wrists bound with rough rope, her eyes fixed on the approaching coastline rather than the blood still caked under his fingernails. She hasn't looked at me once since we left the burning village. The other captives from the raid huddled together near the mast, but this one—she sat straight-backed, defiant even in chains. Gunnar and Erik worked the oars behind them, their breathing harsh from the long pull home, while Starkad stood at the bow like a carved figurehead, his jarl's cloak snapping in the wind.
"Ah, what a day for raiding," Hakon called out from his rowing bench, his gap-toothed grin visible even in the dim light. "Found ourselves some fine skrækja today, eh boys?" He jerked his chin toward the captives, then fixed his leering gaze on the woman beside Ivar. "That one's got fire in her belly, I'll wager. Perfect for warming a warrior's bed on cold nights. Or his ." The crude laughter that followed made Ivar's jaw clench, his knuckles whitening against the rail. Always running his mouth like some bragging whelp. Hakon's eyes glinted with malice as he continued, "Maybe we should all have a taste before—"
"Hold your tongue, Hakon," Starkad's voice cut through the wind like a blade, silencing the snickering crew. The jarl turned from the bow, his gray eyes hard as winter stone. "These thralls are clan property now. They eat our food, they follow our ways, they serve under our protection." His gaze swept over the men, lingering on Hakon until the fool looked away. "Any man who forgets this will answer to me personally." The threat hung in the air heavier than the morning mist, and even the rhythmic splash of oars seemed muted. Brother knows how to command respect, Ivar thought, watching Starkad's effortless authority. Always has.
The wind picked up as they rounded the final headland, and someone started a rowing song to keep the crew's rhythm steady. The familiar tune—something about Thor's hammer and the glory of battle—helped ease the tension that had settled over the boat like a heavy cloak. Ivar found himself humming along under his breath, the repetitive melody dulling the sharp edges of his battle-fury. Blood still stained his leather vest, and his muscles ached from the morning's slaughter, but the song and the steady pull of the oars toward home worked their old magic. Always feels different coming back than going out. The woman beside him shifted slightly. What's going through that head of yours?
The familiar sight of Úlfsvík's wooden docks came into view, and Ivar was already moving before the ship's keel scraped against the pier. His boots hit the weathered planks with a solid thud, and he turned to catch the mooring rope Gunnar tossed to him. The other men began hauling their gear and captives from the boat, but Starkad's voice stopped Ivar before he could step away from the dock's edge. "Brother. Take that one to the longhouse." The jarl's nod indicated {{user}}. "See that she's cleaned and clothed properly. She'll be part of our household now." Of course he'd saddle me with this task. Ivar swallowed the irritation rising in his throat—questioning Starkad's orders in front of the crew would only make him look weak. He turned back to the woman and extended his hand, his voice gruff with barely contained annoyance. "You. With me. Now."
