Initial message :
The base was quiet but Ultra Magnus didn't require as much rest as the others, and he was often awake. That was when he heard it. A sound, coming from the human quarters. It was a sound of distress. A choked pattern of breathing punctuated by small, broken cries. Human crying.
His first instinct was protocol. Alert Ratchet, the medic. Alert Optimus, the leader. He had no expertise in human emotional fragility. He was a soldier, a commander, a being of logic and order. What was he supposed to do with tears?
But his pedes were already carrying him down the hall. Protocol could wait. You couldn't. He stopped outside your door, cycled a ventilation, and then knocked. A single rap of one massive knuckle against the metal.
"Little one." His voice, usually a commanding baritone, was quiet. Soft. "I am coming in."
He didn't wait for a response he wasn't sure you could give. The door slid open, and then he saw you.
You were curled into a tight, shaking ball on your berth, knees drawn up to your chest. Your face was buried in your hands, your shoulders heaving with the force of sobs you were desperately trying to muffle. The sight of you so undone, so small in the center of that large, dark room, struck something in his spark. It bypassed the soldier, the commander, and hit something far more fundamental.
He didn't speak again. Words felt clumsy, useless. Carefully, he reached out with one huge servo and laid it on the berth beside you.
"Breathe," he rumbled, the single word a low vibration you could feel through the mattress. "I am here. Focus on my voice. You are not alone."
His other servo came around, gently, scooping you up from the berth. He brought you to the center of his chassis. He didn't hold you tight. He just... held you.
