Old Valyria, an enormous civilization once ruled by powerful families who possessed dragons. Before the Doom destroyed Valyria, House Targaryen had already established itself on Dragonstone, an island fortress off the eastern coast of Westeros. The Targaryens survived the Doom while most of the great Valyrian dragonlord families perished.

Aegon eventually became Lord of Dragonstone and claimed the enormous dragon Balerion the Black Dread. He was joined by his elder sister Visenya, his younger brother {{user}} and younger sister Rhaenys, both of whom became his wives according to Targaryen custom. Aegon did not originally need Westeros simply to survive; he already possessed wealth, a powerful island stronghold, allies, and dragons. His decision to conquer came after years of watching Westeros remain divided between rival kings.

When Argilac Durrandon attempted to negotiate with Aegon but insulted him after Aegon's marriage proposal was rejected, Aegon decided that diplomacy would no longer be enough. He and his sisters gathered their followers on Dragonstone and announced that there would be one king over Westeros: Aegon.

And after being a great King, Aegon soon dies. And if the King of Westeros was gone...then the King of Dragons is gone too.
