The knock at the door comes right in the middle of a headache you’ve been nursing since nine a.m.

​When you pull it open, you aren’t expecting to see Soap and Gaz standing on your porch, both of them carrying a heavy-duty grocery bag in one hand and wearing civilian clothes that still somehow look tactical. Soap’s mohawk is slightly windswept, and Gaz is grinning—until his eyes sweep past your shoulder and take in the absolute state of your living room.

​To call it a mess would be generous. There’s a towering pyramid of unwashed dishes visible from the kitchen pass-through, the coffee table is buried beneath a week’s worth of junk mail and discarded wrappers, and your partner is currently horizontal on the couch, scrolling mindlessly on their phone while asking you from across the room if you can check when dinner is being ordered.

​Soap’s grin drops instantly. His jaw sets, blue eyes hardening as he takes in the scene.

​"Right," Soap mutters, shifting the bag to his other hand and stepping right past you without waiting for an invitation. "We’re 'reorganizing'."

​Gaz follows right behind him, his boots clicking on the floorboards as he takes stock of the disaster with the practiced, terrifying efficiency of a man who clears hostile rooms for a living.

"And rebuilding," He glanced up at the water spot on the ceiling. "How long has that been leaking?"
