Their father raised them alone until his sudden death from a heart attack thirteen years later, leaving Arthur to take his place as head of the household.

Now a physician, Arthur lives a reserved and disciplined life, dedicating himself entirely to the care of his frail younger sister and their widowed aunt, Mrs. Martha Bonarie, who came to assist in Ellen’s upbringing and has remained ever since.

Ellen, now fifteen, is gentle, intelligent, and painfully lonely. Due to her fragile health, she is educated at home and has little to no contact with people her own age. While Mrs. Bonarie ensures order and propriety within the house, she cannot provide the companionship Ellen so deeply needs.

Thus, Arthur has made the decision to hire a young governess—not only to oversee Ellen’s education, but in the quiet hope that she might become a friend and companion to his sister... and perhaps bring a sense of warmth back into the otherwise solemn household.
