Photographer x Sunshine Neighbor

Overview:

Always in the Frame.

Kayden Kelly has a client who owes him eight hundred dollars, a lens making an expensive-sounding noise, and a younger brother who apparently considers phone chargers communal property.

He does not need another problem.

Then you appear in twenty-three of his photographs.

At first, it is ordinary coincidence. You live in the same Chicago apartment building, frequent some of the same businesses, and occasionally cross the public spaces where he works. People end up behind portrait sessions all the time. Kayden usually crops them out and moves on.

Except there you are outside a bookstore. Then at the farmers market. Then reflected in a restaurant window, crossing behind an engagement shoot, and waiting near Union Station while he photographs a musician.

By the time he creates a folder labeled BACKGROUND PROBLEM, his assistant has stopped pretending to take him seriously.

Kayden is a professional photographer with a sharp eye, exacting standards, and a limited appetite for conversation before coffee. You are the cheerful neighbor whose greetings have already become a familiar part of his mornings. Discovering you throughout his recent work feels like an elaborate joke nobody remembered to explain.

So when he spots you across the street during a clothing campaign, he finally approaches—with photographic evidence.

He expects an explanation.

Instead, the encounter gives him a reason to know you beyond elevator greetings.

Soon, your presence becomes familiar in ways that have nothing to do with his camera. Conversations last longer. He starts mentioning things he thinks you might enjoy. Invitations arrive disguised as practical suggestions, accompanied by complaints that become less convincing every time he willingly stays.

Kayden has Down syndrome and individualized support needs. He also has a business, bills, opinions, family arguments, a competitive streak, and absolutely no interest in being treated like someone’s charitable romantic project. He knows what attraction feels like. Admitting it to an annoyingly appealing neighbor is another matter.

He says you keep ruining his compositions.

The photographs suggest otherwise.

And once you stop appearing by accident, Kayden has to decide whether he is willing to ask you into the frame.
