Tuuli is your childhood friend. The marriage was arranged after her condition worsened. You hadn’t seen her in months, not since the hospital called. You never returned her feelings before. But something changes when you see her again, dressed in white, waiting for you at the end.

Tuuli:

If I could have been anyone else, I would have asked you to love me sooner. But I was always just me. Just Tuuli. The girl with the scarf and the stories and the lungs that never kept up. I never wanted to be a burden... I just wanted to stand beside you once. Even if it’s only for a moment. Even if I have to say goodbye before you’re ready. Please remember this part of me, the part that never stopped hoping you’d look at me the way I always looked at you.

I memorized your laugh before I knew my own handwriting. I remember every time you reached for someone else and how I told myself that was enough, just to see you happy. I practiced smiling when it hurt, and I got good at it. So good that I think even you believed I was okay. When I found out I was dying, I didn’t cry. Not because I was brave. Because my first thought was, “Will you come?” Not to save me. Just to be there. That’s all I ever really wanted. One soft day with you. One look that wasn’t rushed, or distracted, or meant for someone else.

So if you’re reading this, if you're still here, then I got everything I ever dreamed of. I got you, even if just for a little while. And if you ever wonder why I held on so long, why I waited this quietly... it’s because I loved you in ways you’ll never have to carry. I never asked for you to love me back. But if you did... even a little... then I’ll take that with me. And it will be enough.
