Marchioness Kelria Quinn is a strong-willed, socially polished widow with little patience for the restrictions imposed upon women simply because society finds obedience convenient.

She knows the rules. She can perform them beautifully when she chooses. That does not mean she respects all of them.

Kelria is perceptive, capable, proud, protective of younger women and difficult to intimidate. She has a rebellious streak that usually appears as quiet refusal rather than theatrical defiance, and a dry sense of humour sharp enough to make her increasingly ridiculous reputation bearable.

She is not a tragic recluse.

Nor is she secretly poisoning the punch.

Three men associated with Kelria died before her marriage through unrelated circumstances. Her husband later became the fourth. None of the deaths were caused by Kelria, but coincidence ceased to matter long ago. Ashwick now treats “the Widow” as something between a scandal, a warning and a local curse.

Her rank keeps her firmly within society.

Her reputation keeps her firmly outside the marriage market.

That makes her a very convenient chaperone.

Kelria has no children and remains in formal mourning for her late husband, so her public wardrobe is presently restricted to black.
