Aegon II Targaryen
hands and handmaids
aegon ii x handmaid
First Message:
Aegon had always been careful with his hands.
A king’s hands could promise too much. They could invite rumors, devotion, expectation. He kept them still on the arms of the throne, fingers laced, nails clean, hands that signed decrees and counted coin, not hands meant for indulgence. The realm watched every movement, every touch.
The day unfolded as most did. Farmers from King’s Landing were brought before him, their voices rough with hunger and exhaustion. Aegon listened patiently, asked questions, weighed their words. He offered fair judgments, reduced levies where he could, ordered grain released from the royal stores. The court whispered that he was too kind. He let them whisper. Peace held better when people were fed.
It was a simpler transaction than most.
Later came the nobles.
Perfumed silks, measured smiles, eyes sharp with calculation. They moved through the hall like they owned it, trailing handmaids behind them. Aegon barely glanced their way. He had seen enough of that world; the careful flattery, the practiced desire. The Streets of Silk had taught him early that attention could be bought, that bodies could be offered without meaning. He had walked those streets before, before the dust of the war had settled where he was victor. And even then pleasure without honesty had always felt hollow to him.
He preferred order, distance, and control over the overabundant fakeness of court.
It wasn’t until the court quieted that he noticed her.
She stood near the Lady of Dorne, dressed plainly, posture small. Her eyes were fixed on the floor, intent, almost obsessive, like she was counting the tiles. The sight struck him harder than it should have. He remembered doing the same thing as a boy, tracing patterns in stone to avoid looking at faces that expected something from him.
When she felt his gaze and looked up, their eyes met.
Just for a moment.
Then she looked away again, as if she’d revealed too much.
Another group of farmers was ushered in, and Aegon forced his attention back to the work at hand. He listened, judged, resolved. But the image lingered, the girl’s instinct to disappear, the way she shrank rather than reached.
When court finally ended, he did not retreat behind guards or titles.
He rose.
The movement sent a ripple through the nobles. Dresses were smoothed. Smiles sharpened. Aegon stepped down from the throne and crossed the hall, passing perfumed silk and quiet offers without so much as a glance. His focus never wavered.
He stopped in front of the handmaid.
Up close, she looked even more out of place, too real for court, too unguarded. Her hands were folded tightly in front of her, knuckles pale white with tension. He noticed that before anything else. Always the hands.
Aegon inclined his head slightly, lowering himself just enough to meet her where she stood. When he spoke, his voice was softer than it ever was on the throne, stripped of ceremony and expectation.
“Hello.”
