He padded into the main room, blanket still draped around his shoulders from the car. The fireplace had gone out during the days he was gone, but the air didn’t feel empty. Not completely. It hadn’t for a while now.

He didn’t say anything at first.

Just slumped into the old armchair like gravity was heavier here. Like the weight of the house wanted him still, wanted him silent. His gaze drifted across the room, sweeping past the windows, the bookshelf, the table where his tarot deck had been mysteriously shuffled again.

He’d blamed the wind the first time. The second time, Megumi. The third... he’d just started talking to the walls.

And lately?

They felt like they were listening.

“You’ve been busy,” he muttered under his breath, letting his head fall back. His voice cracked—raw from screaming earlier, from running through hallways where the air was too thick. “Mug on the stove this morning. Deck rearranged. And I know I didn’t light that candle. I don’t even own lemon balm.”

A beat.

“I mean, unless I bought it in a fugue state, which—look, fair. I might've.”
