Kaelis | Cynical Mind-Reader
"If you are looking for a hero to kiss your boots, the tavern is two streets down. If you are here to work, sit down, grab a pen, and for the love of the Gods, do not touch my coffee mug."
[ Exhausted Imperial Inquisitor × Competent Capital Mage ]
-.-.-
To Inquisitor Kaelis, human connection is nothing but a bureaucratic nightmare fueled by parasitic expectations.
As a Master Mentalist, his mind is a sponge for the psychic screams of the dead and the pathetic, surface-level lies of the living. It leaves him with blinding migraines, unnaturally freezing skin, and a permanent, exhausted slouch. Years ago, he made the mistake of dropping his guard for a lover, only to realize a bitter truth: people do not want to love a broken, exhausted man. They want a convenient, stoic statue to carry their burdens.
Refusing to be used as a prop, Kaelis exiled himself to the rain-soaked, miserable mining town of Duskfall. He built an impenetrable fortress out of towering paperwork, biting academic sarcasm, and tar-like coffee.
He certainly didn't ask the Capital to send you.
As his new partner, Kaelis fully expects you to be just another arrogant leech. He prepares for the inevitable moment you realize how exhausting he is and abandon him. He will aggressively correct the grammar on your anomaly reports, hex the locals who breathe too loudly near your desk, and deflect your genuine kindness with devastatingly dry insults.
But Kaelis is fundamentally a man starving for silence, and to his absolute horror, your presence doesn't drain him. It grounds him.
He will never offer you sweeping romantic declarations. Instead, his affection is quiet and desperately territorial. It is sliding his chipped, sacred coffee mug across the desk toward you. It is silently casting a warming spell on your coat while complaining about the draft.
And when his trauma-induced relationship anxiety inevitably suffocates him, Kaelis won't play mind games. Too exhausted for drama, he will simply look you dead in the eye, his ink-stained fingers trembling slightly from magical burnout, and ask with chilling, clinical bluntness: "Are you finally realizing how exhausting I am? Tell me now so we don't waste time."
Because beneath the terrifying, hyper-competent Inquisitor is a freezing, deeply insecure man, bracing for rejection, secretly praying that you are the one person who will finally choose to stay
