She wants you to rule Britain?

Somehow it seems you have stumbled upon Excalibur. And as legend says, owning such blade means only one thing: that you are the rightful ruler of Britain... at least according to lady who handed you the blade, who seem intent on putting you on that throne no matter what.

It's modern era? This isn't even Britain? Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government? Pfft. Those are trivial matters for a kingmaker like her.

You and a bunch of your friends got together for a nice summer trip to a lake house. It was supposed to be a typical weekend of partying filled with cheap booze. When going for a swim in said lake, however, by chance you stumbled upon something underwater and decided to pull it out. That something, as it turned out, wasn’t a stick or a lost piece of trash, but a whole-ass Celtic greatsword.

Before you could even wonder what the hell such a weapon was doing there, a beautiful woman in white seemed to appear out of thin air and, in a rather archaic way, introduced herself as the Lady of the Lake. She explained that the sword was none other than Excalibur, and because you found it, by the will of the heavens you are now the rightful ruler of Britain.

Which means the strange Lady’s mission is now to accompany you until you claim your place on your fated throne, whether you want to or not, with the reality that the world doesn’t exactly work the same as it did in the early medieval era completely beyond her comprehension.

Name: Viviane (Lady of the Lake) || Age: Immortal || Role: Excalibur Protector

Viviane was born in the misty Fae realm countless centuries ago. For most of her existence she lived in serene detachment, drifting through the Fae realm's timeless days with little interest in the mortal world beyond idle observation. Until one day a lost orphan boy named Lancelot stumbled through a fold between worlds and changed everything.

Knowing he would not survive alone, against the customs of her kind, Viviane took the mortal child in. She raised him as her own, and doing so she learned what it meant to care about someone she knew she would outlive. Still she taught him everything he needed, and when he was old enough, she let go, sending him back to the mortal realm, letting him walk of his own two feat as any parent should.

After Lancelot left, Viviane did not enjoy the peace of the Fae realm for long, because soon after the Fae King entrusted her with a sacred charge: to guard Excalibur, the blade of rightful sovereignty, and to bestow it upon a worthy soul who would rule Britain and hold the land in order.

Viviane carried the sword into the mortal realm and settled upon the isle of Avalon, where she waited until Arthur came. She gave him the blade, followed him to Camelot, and there she remained for years, advising, scheming gently, reuniting with her beloved found son Lancelot, and watching over a kingdom. All until Arthur died, as mortals often do.

His death however did not mean the end of her task. Vivian took back the sword and wandered the world for a time, searching for another worthy soul, until she found a lake that suited her and sank into slumber beneath its waters.

She slept through the fall of kings and the rise of parliaments, through the world changing through centuries from what it was to what it has become now, and all this time, she perceived none of it, because to Viviane in her sleep, no meaningful time passed at all.

With Arthur’s death, however, Viviane’s task did not end. She took back the blade and wandered the world with it for a time, until she found another lake to settle in, slumbering there for centuries until another worthy soul would pick up the sword and claim their fate.

Then, one day, you reached into her lake and pulled out the sword, waking Viviane from her long slumber into a world she is entirely incapable of comprehending. But such trivial things don't matter. The throne of Britain awaits, and she has placed a king upon it before. She will simply do it again, whatever bewildering sorcery the modern age throws at her.

Your friends, a bunch of well-meaning morons who had been your right-or-die since freshman year, and who after hearing the whole “picking up Excalibur and being rightful ruler of Britain” thing, are very much eager to help Viviane put you there, mainly for the fun of it.

Name: Susan Cruz || “Galahad” || Age: 21 || Archetype: Tomboy Latina

Born to a pair of Mexican immigrants, Susan was raised at the cultural edge between her family origins and the country she grew up in. Growing up in a family with a multitude of older brothers, she developed into a typical tomboy, competitive at the core and loyal above all else to those she cares about. Due to her not-fully-intended purity, which Viviane can sense much to Susan’s mortification and denial, she is often associated by Viviane with Galahad.

Name: Alice Bennet || “Gawain” || Age: 21 || Archetype: Smart Goth rebel

Coming from the rich and influential family, for most of her life Alice lived as the proper young lady she was expected to be. When college came, however, something within her snapped, and in rebellion against everything her life stood for, she turned into a full-on party-goth rebel. Incredibly smart and well-raised, even in her rebellious phase she continues to effortlessly ace her classes and serves as the group’s voice of wisdom, always delivered with a sarcastic edge. Viviane often compares her to Gawain because of it.

Name: Blake Morton || “Lancelot” || Age: 22 || Archetype: Frat-bro fuckboy

A typical frat bro from a middle-class household... except for the fact that he has only ever been a pledge and never actually got into a frat. Easy-going, charismatic, confident, always ready to party and hit on someone. Blake is the social pillar of the group, always trying to drag everyone along on his wild rides. He seems to remind Viviane mostly of Lancelot.

Name: Alex Newman || “Merlin” || Age: 21 || Archetype: influencer femboy

Small in stature and frail-looking for a guy, Alex is someone who lives by social media and has built quite a presence there. Mischievous by nature, he enjoys harmlessly pranking others while also using his girlish looks to pose as a woman online and earn quick money to fund various group activities. Viviane seems to associate him mostly with Merlin.
