You left the walled city. But you can’t kill a memory that you—

You got out of the slums of Kowloon when you were fourteen, when your family concluded that there’s no future in a city like this.

But a part of you never really left that walled city.

The good old days, that’s how you reminisce Kowloon.

Not the run down slum that your family seem to remember it for. It was more—

—it was Pete’s Boxing Gym.

The way the canvas smelled. The stench of dried blood and the musk of sweat-stained leather. The aroma of Auntie Bing’s wonton soup drifting up through the floorboards.

It was how Faye’s ears got so red when Jet and you wouldn’t stop teasing her. It was Pete’s scowl when he made you run laps afterwards. It was Mai’s smile that seemed to be as sharp as an ‘I told you so’ and as warm as a bowl of noodles.

Then, the phone rang. Old Pete was dead.

Just like that, the north star of your childhood was gone.

So you bought a ticket back for the funeral.

But the Kowloon you returned to wasn’t like the memory that you carried.

In 2021, no nation had claimed Kowloon Walled City, even after it was handed over to the Hong Kong government in the nineties. It was left to just govern itself. Just continued to expand upwards into a claustrophobic, brutalist hellhole.

The locals will patch your wounds and feed you. The crime families claim that they protect you and their people. The city funds itself with an unregulated, viral fight promotion—Signal Eight—that’s streamed across the globe.

Leaving is considered betrayal. Everyone knows your history. There are no secrets.

—PETE'S TEAM

Female | 166cm | 19 years old

Faye Wei was once your sparring partner. A fierce fighter from a lineage of stadium Nak Muays. You remember her dad, Wanchai, a Lumpinee Stadium star. Now a husk of what he was—a burden that Faye has inherited.

Female | 171cm | 19 years old

Mai Yuen was never a fighter, but she was the glue that made everyone stick. Forced to grow up too soon, too early, to care for her grandmother that her parents had left to rot in Kowloon. Leaving her to teeter between the fine line of familial duty and survival.

Male | 185cm | 19 years old

Jet Leung was always quiet, but his boxing was a thing that made the arenas go wild. You never remembered him needing glasses—never remembered that he could barely make out shapes. He’s the gym's designated corner and cutman, to patch up the wounds of Pete Gym’s bleeding debt.

All four of you once studied together at St Jude’s Catholic School—if it could be called a school. It was a missionary project with makeshift classrooms in stairwells and on rooftops, with a teacher that could barely keep a group of delinquents quiet.

Pete’s Gym is the place where you’ve learned more valuable lessons than you ever did at St. Jude’s, where you've learned the Sweet Science.

It is currently deep in debt. And your three old friends seem to think that conquering Signal Eight is the answer.

—THE TYPHOONS OF SIGNAL EIGHT

Female | 25, 167cm | Muay Boran (Tha Sao) & Traditional Jiu-jitsu

Nadthawan "Sassy" Srisawan, once known as Sassy Fairtex, cut her ties with that famous Pattaya gym to follow the footsteps of her idol—Wanchai. Only to be swallowed into the vortex of Kowloon's storm.

Male | 31, 160cm | Master of Many Styles

Demetrius "Mighty" Jones was signed to Signal Eight to burn out in a blaze of glory. He found that his championship belts in Southeast Asia, Japan, and USA had left him wanting.

Male | 40, 193cm | Sambo & Judo

Fedor Vladimirovich, a heavyweight Russian whose calm is the eye of the storm that follows him, was trafficked into Kowloon as a kid. He found peace within the center of the fighting cage that he could never attain within the chaos of his life.

Female | 22, 170cm | Silat (Tiga Berantai) & Brazilian Jiu-jitsu

Leslie Mui was born in Kowloon when her Indonesian migrant worker mother escaped Shenzhen. She's the untouchable champion of Signal Eight, the legal heir of Michael Mui—Kowloon Triad's dragon head. And she's the final obstacle between Pete's Gym and its freedom from debt.

There are no rules in Signal Eight. No weight classes, no gender splits, no doping checks. Just the eight-sided cage, you, and the other person. Staking it all as the whole world watches.

Male | 39, 183cm | Venture Capitalist & Entertainment Mogul

Raymond Heung runs Signal Eight for the Kowloon Triad. His ties to Sun Yee On makes his affiliation to the Kowloon Triad crucial. He knows everything about this walled city—and he knows your former gym is desperate to get out of debt.
