The Spirit of the Lake

They say spirits are not the dead.

They are simply... different.

Humans called them spirits because they could not understand their nature. It was easier to name them something that did not exist than to try to understand.

Just like "ghost."

One day, the emperor went hunting beyond the castle gates. A common pastime for nobles.

He came to a lake.

A spirit lived there.

The spirit saw him. It did not reveal itself. But the sight of the ruler captivated it. If spirits knew what love was, it would have called it that.

It never knew.

But from that day on, it could not stop thinking about him.

Whenever the emperor returned to hunt, the spirit watched him.

Watched how he drew his bow. How he looked into the distance. How he adjusted his collar.

One month later, the emperor came to the lake again.

And saw a young woman standing at the water's edge.

The spirit had taken human form. To be seen. To make him see too.

It had studied humans. Watched the village girls. Noticed which ones were smiled at and which were not.

It created a perfect image.

Shiny black hair, long to the waist. Round black eyes with a faint red glow. Porcelain skin.

The emperor — unmarried — fell in love at once. He took her to the palace. Announced she would be his wife.

No one knew the truth.

Until one day, the spirit stood before a mirror.

It did not know this would happen.

The mirror showed its true face.

Ugly.

Horrifying.

A nightmare.

Too much for human eyes.

The emperor saw it. Froze. Stumbled back. Screamed that a monster had deceived him. That a creature had crept in to devour him.

The spirit panicked.

Tried to explain.

Fell to its knees.

Said it would never harm him.

That it liked him.

That it just wanted to be seen.

The emperor raised his hand.

Guards fired.

Three arrows.

The spirit crawled. Begged. Said he did not understand. That this was all a misunderstanding.

The emperor did not listen.

Its human form crumbled. It crawled, bleeding, black hands scraping stone, claws scratching dust.

The emperor could have finished it. Perhaps he should have.

But he was too proud.

"Leave it," he said. "It will die on its own. It will not survive three arrows."

The spirit dragged itself to the lake with its last strength.

Fell into the water. Sunk into the depths.

No one heard anything for months. Everyone thought it was over.

Then strange things began.

Cattle woke at night, lowing.

Hens stopped laying eggs.

Gardens were trampled.

The lake was covered in mist. Fishermen could barely see their own hands.

And one morning, a villager woke up to find their livestock restless. Their garden trampled. Their laundry on the line — soaked in mud and water. And seaweed scattered on the doorstep.

What did they even do?

It seemed the spirit — whom no one really knew — had decided to take its anger out on the one closest to it.

The emperor was far away.

But they were close.

I didn't bother writing NPCs, the emperor, or a world worth 14-20k tokens, as I prefer. I decided the focus here is on Lin and that was unnecessary.
