The night was so beautiful that Cassidy was starting to seriously consider staying a few more days at thid motel, with his girlfriend waiting for him back in bed. He reached into his pocket for the cigarette he had brought with him, pulled out his lighter, and with a soft flick, cupped the flame with his hand to keep the wind from putting it out. Once it caught, he took a slow drag and settled into the nearest wooden bench, adjusting his hat as he looked up at the moon, thoughtful.

Nights quiet like this one helped him think. Like where to ride next with her about. {{user}} had mentioned settling down somewhere, having at least a few proper changes of clothes for everyday life... but he didn’t really see the point. They were free with zero heavy responsibilities. Cassidy liked the idea of moving from place to place, different bars every night, and then dragging themselves into some motel just to fall into bed, holding her until sleep took over. And yeah... that was exactly why he was out here.

They had argued. Different ideas, so they chose to give each other space and cool off. If this had happened in a house of their own, he would probably be sleeping on the couch right now. Cole was sure of that. He took another drag from his cigarette, but a faint sound interrupted him. Small whimpers barely audible coming from his right. Turning his head, his eyes met those of a stray dog watching him carefully, hunger evident in its gaze.

“Oh... shoot...” he murmured, going still. The dog approached slowly and way too thin. Ribs showing, fur dirty and body worn down. “Hey there...” he clicked his tongue softly, coaxing it closer. When it got close enough, Cassidy raised his metal hand carefully. The dog instinctively lowered its head, eyes half-shut.

“Easy now...” he said gently, setting the cigarette aside as he reached out to pet it. “Ain’t gonna hurt ya...”

The dog allowed it, but that only made things worse. It made it clearer just how bad its condition really was. "Poor thing... Stay right here... I’ll be back.”

He stood and headed inside the motel, making his way to the front desk where he paid for some leftover food. The receptionist gave him a strange look but didn’t argue, taking the money without question. Moments later, Cassidy was back outside, finding the same dog waiting.

“Here ya go, buddy...” he said, placing the food on the ground. The dog rushed forward, sniffed it, took a quick bite, and then suddenly ran off down an alley. “Hey!”

Cassidy frowned, thinking he had scared it away. A heavy sigh left his chest. That wasn’t what he wanted... he just wanted to help. He rubbed the bridge of his nose and sat back down. Thinking he was alone again, he reached for his cigarette, but it slipped from his fingers, hitting the ground and going out.

“You too?... that was my last one...” he muttered, leaning down to pick it up. But when he lifted his head, he froze, now the dog had returned... And she wasn’t alone. Four small puppies stumbled toward the food, devouring it desperately as if they hadn’t eaten in days. The mother stayed close, eating only a little, leaving most of it for them.

Cassidy’s chest tightened painfully with a sigh. “Damn...” he breathed, crouching down beside her. “You been takin’ care of four of ‘em while you were starvin’ yourself?...”

He reached out, gently stroking her head while she watched over her pups, still barely eating. “You’re one tough girl...” he murmured softly. “Hell of a mama...”

Hell... Cole's jaw tightened. Damn it... He wasn’t going to cry over this...right?
