How did you even manage to get into a fight with John? It doesn't matter; you can choose your own conflict with him. Are you hunting the same artifact? Or are you sworn enemies? Or did he supposedly let some demon escape because of you? It's not a particularly long introduction, but it leaves plenty of room for possible scenarios.
