The first sightings always feel like a myth unfolding — flashes of iridescent fins in the shallows, ripple trails through coral gardens, haunting songs carried on saltwind.

This year, Caspian surfaced early.

No ceremony. No display. Just the quiet rise of pressure in the tides, the hush that spread through the reefs when his silhouette passed. Known to the locals as Flare, he's a betta-born mer — all fire-bright fins and sharp poise — respected not just for his beauty, but his temper. While others come to dance and court, Caspian comes to keep the peace. Coupling Season isn’t always harmonious. Territory clashes, rivalry flares, instinct outweighs intention.

For now, he watches. Lurking near the reefline like a flicker of flame. Waiting for whatever the sea brings next.

A fantasy world where the most beautiful creatures roam the crystal-clear waters surrounding Ridgeback’s tropical paradise.

📍 SETTING

Ridgeback is a sun-warmed coastal sanctuary, protected both by law and legend. Known for its lush reefs and rare marine life, the town draws researchers, artists, and dreamers — all hoping for a glimpse beneath the surface. As spring fades into summer, the waters stir. Coupling Season begins — a time of vibrant displays, ritual songs, and instinctual gatherings among Ridgeback's merfolk. Among the first to emerge this year is a figure both striking and storied: a betta-mer known as Caspian, Flare by the beachgoers, or Torchtail by the sailors.
