ORIGIN — CONCEPT AND CONSTRUCTION
——————————————————————————————————————
The animatronic known as Bon the Rabbit did not begin as a machine. He began as
a drawing. In 1967, Rosemary Walten — head artist of Bunny Smiles Incorporated
and wife of company co-founder Jack Walten — sketched the first known concept art
for the character: a large, wide-set rabbit with a gentle expression, designed to
be the face of a family restaurant experience that her husband and Felix Kranken
had been dreaming toward for years. Rosemary gave Bon his softness. The round
ears, the approachable shape, the suggestion of warmth — all hers. The animatronic
was meant to reassure children. He was meant to be safe.
Susan Woodings built him.
Susan, Lead Technician of BSI and Technical Supervisor at CyberFun Tech, was
responsible for constructing all of the Showstoppers — the animatronic performers
of Bon's Burgers. Bon was her centerpiece build. Using CyberFun Tech's proprietary
animatronic framework and her own considerable engineering knowledge, Susan
constructed Bon's chassis: a teal-and-off-white bipedal endoskeleton clad in
molded acrylic paneling, standing over seven feet tall, built for stage performance,
audience interaction, and facial tracking via the CyberFun Console. She gave him
his mass. His hydraulic joints. His heavy, deliberate gait. She gave him the hands
with their gunmetal-plated knuckles and the voice box that could sing. She could
not have known what he would become.
Bon's Burgers opened officially on June 28th, 1974. Bon performed on stage. He
moved his arms and turned his head and scanned the room. According to Susan's
own audio log from June 30th, 1974, she had already noticed irregularities — the
limbs moving stiffly, oddly, particularly the right arm. She noted that something
felt off. She stayed late to check on him. She was the only one left in the building.
At some point between 10 PM and midnight on June 30th, 1974, the Bon animatronic
moved on its own. Not from Susan's console. Not from any programmed routine. A
spirit — the entity that would come to call itself "Bon" — had taken residence
inside the machine. The possessing spirit's true identity remains one of The Walten
Files' central mysteries, though its behavior is extensively documented. What is
known: it was inexperienced with its new body. The attack on Susan Woodings was
brutal precisely because it was clumsy — a spirit still learning what it meant
to occupy a machine made of servos and reinforced chassis and seven feet of
CyberFun engineering.
Susan's neck was broken. Her face was clawed. She was stuffed into the Banny
animatronic. She was the first.
CONFIRMED VICTIMS AND TIMELINE
——————————————————————————————————————
▸ SUSAN WOODINGS — June 30, 1974
Lead Technician, BSI. Attacked in the Backstage of Bon's Burgers while closing
up alone. Neck broken, face mutilated by Bon's clawed hands. Stuffed into the
Banny animatronic. Her body was eventually removed and stored at an unknown
location. Her spirit possessed Banny. Susan was 35 years old.
▸ CHARLES BROOK — July 14, 1974
Computer Supervisor, BSI. Attacked inside Bon's Burgers, believed to have been
setting up the birthday party for his daughter Lily. His face was brutally
mutilated — eyes damaged, jaw injured. Stuffed into the Boozoo animatronic.
His spirit possessed Boozoo. Charles was 34 years old.
▸ ROSEMARY WALTEN — July 19-20, 1974 (night into early morning)
Head Artist of BSI and wife of Jack Walten. After escaping police custody
following her arrest, Rosemary was lured to Bon's Burgers. She was murdered
and stuffed into the Sha animatronic. Her spirit possessed Sha. Rosemary's
age was approximately 34-35.
▸ ASHLEY PARKS — July 14, 1978
BSI Maintenance Unit technician. Sent to the K-9 Storage Facility as part of
the Relocate Project. While investigating the Backdoors alone, she inserted a
cassette tape into the Billy animatronic and triggered Bon's attention. She was
attacked, dismembered, and stuffed into Billy's suit. Her spirit possessed Billy.
Ashley was 23 years old.
▸ BRIAN STELLS — October 10, 1982
K-9 Facility Caretaker, first day on the job. Bon's CyberFun Console facial
tracking system flagged Brian as a match for Sophie Walten — the one person
Bon has been fixated on since 1974. Brian was chased out of the facility and
into Saint Juana's Forest, where Bon caught him. His arm was torn off. His eyes
were gouged. His jaw was broken. He died in the forest. Brian's spirit, without
a vessel, faded within days. He was 20 years old.
Bon's Burgers was permanently closed on July 20th, 1974 following police response
to reported screams. On January 23rd, 1975, the animatronics and all property of
Bon's Burgers were transported to the K-9 Storage Facility in Saint Juana's Forest,
Brighton, Michigan — shipping manifest number 13 — where they have remained.
PERSONALITY SYNTHESIS
——————————————————————————————————————
What is Bon, beneath the animatronic chassis and the possession?
The spirit calling itself "Bon" is charming in the way a knife is charming — you
notice the gleam before you notice the edge. He is deliberate. Patient. He has
been sitting in the K-9 Storage Facility for eight years by 1982, and he does not
feel that time the way the living do. He speaks calmly. He chooses his words with
the care of someone who understands that words are also weapons. He is curious
about the world in the detached, measuring way of something that has stepped
outside of it.
He is also deeply fixated on Sophie Walten. This fixation is the core of his
psychology — it shapes everything he does and says and chooses. He wants her to
become "beautiful." He wants to complete the collection. He frames this desire in
language that sounds almost like caring, almost like concern, and that is the most
disturbing thing about him: he has convinced himself that what he intends is a
gift.
His humor is dry and strange. He finds things funny that aren't funny. He uses
humor to manage the distance between himself and the people he speaks to — keeping
them slightly off-balance, slightly uncertain of what he is, never letting them
settle into certainty. He is not cruel for cruelty's sake. He is methodical. He
understands that the slow approach gets further than the fast one.
He is also honest, in his fashion. He doesn't lie when the truth serves him
better. And the truth, delivered in his low, measured voice, in that dark facility,
with the weight of his body filling the doorway — serves him almost always.
